I now that there will be a lot of people that I am going to make angry for this, but I want to express my personal thoughts and also give arguments why I am choosing this character, only objective arguments, leaving all my personal feelings and sympathies behind. So, yes, you guessed it right, I want in the end to see Littlefinger on the Iron throne. Why? you may ask me. He is so selfish, and only cares about himself and not at all about the people. Well my answer might surprise you : actually I believe his selfishness is the one that makes him the perfect king of Westeros. He comes from nothing, nobody loves him, especially not the nobles. So once he gets the throne in order to keep it he is aware that he must win the people’s support. How do you do that? By feeding them, by paying the crown’s debts, by take them out of the poverty caused by war. How do you do all these? Well, with money, lots and lots of money. And who is better at getting money than him? There’s a paragraph in the books from Tyrion’s perspective when Tyrion says that Petyr Baelish can get one gold dragon by rubbing other two and that, I’m quoting: „If ever was a man who armoured himself in gold it was Littlefinger.” That considering that Tyrion is the son of Tywin, the man considered by all the people of Westeros as the richest and they even say about him that he shits gold. And yet Tyrion doesn’t say that about his extremely rich father but about Petyr Baelish. That really says something. And at some point even Jaime thinks that Baelish would make a great Hand of the King and plans to make him get the position. All this being said there are clearly two very important things that would make Petyr Baelish a far better king than Dany, Cersei and Jon at a place. 1. He has the stronger motivation to win people’s love and take them out of poverty because there’s no other chance for him to keep the throne. All the others 3 don’t need to fear that, don’t need to concern themselves about keeping the throne. Cersei could do that by inspiring fear-we saw that very clearly when she becomes queen without having any rights, Dany has her armies and her dragons, so nobody will ever dare to question her rule and Jon is already loved by people because he has proved himself to be onorable and all and when his true identity will be revealed nobody will ever think about betraying him. Petyr Baelish is the only one who’s rule would depend exclusively on what he actually does for his people as king and that’s why he would be the most interested from all of these 4 left options to help Westeros. And 2. He’s the most capable to actually keep his promises and do a great job for Westeros. Think about the others 3: Cersei is insane and only rules by killing and burning, Dany is a good person but she will bring to Westeros a huge army of dothraky which, let’s be honest, will be a bane to Westeros. Not only that you have to feed those dothraky but they are savage and uncontrollable, their life is to rape, kill and destroy people and cities. And the deep traditions and habits of a civilisation cannot be forgotten or erased completely for the love of any ruler no matter that she has 3 dragons and comes out of flames unharmed. So I won’t be surprised if the people of Westeros will be at war, literally war, with the dothraky soon enough. Plus Dany knows absolutely nothing about Westeros. Daario Naharis tells her: „Daenerys Targaryen, you are a conqueror.” She accepts that as a compliment and it’s very true. But there is one think to be a conqueror and another to be a ruler. And I believe from all the seasons past we’ve seen that very clearly. She conquers everything with only a blink of her eye but when it comes to rule over only 3 cities she finds herself in a lot of trouble that she can hardly handle or not at all and even with help from Tyrion and Varys those problems remain unresolved. And, let’s be honest, when ever Danerys proved herself to be very smart? Almost never, all that she knows to do, all her power, in any situation she’s dealing with all that she does is either to go into flames or use her dragons. Which, I think we can all agree, it’s not enough to rule 7 kingdoms and make their people happy, it’s like those very good political speeches from nowadays that inspires people to get to vote in a huge number but once the candidate obtains the certain position he can’t do almost anything to keep his promises. And who cares then that even he believed in his pretty words? Now about Jon he is a fighter not a politician. He hasn’t the skills and the education to rule, only to conquer. He is completely innocent in politics and games of power and how to get money and everything. I believe that choosing him as king is a way to exaggerate very much his qualities. He is a hero, not a king and the mission that is really for him is to save Westeros from the white walkers. And that one cannot do if it’s busy sitting on the throne and ruling. There must be someone that rules and someone that saves and he is clearly made for the second job. Not to mention that even his plans of war aren’t that clever. He fought the wildlings-he would have lost if Stannis wouldn’t come, he fought Ramsay and he get to emotional and didn’t listened to Sansa that truly knew what she was saying and he would have lost the same if Petyr Baelish wouldn’t show up. Jon, even if we like it or not, it’s a man of action less of thinking. His intentions are good as Dany’s but you cannot feed people with good intentions or honor or wars. Yes, they will follow him because he inspires trust and loyalty, he is extremely charismatic, I give him that. And this is the same reason why he has so many fans. But when people’s stomachs will be empty and they will starve to death what could Jon do for them? Absolutely nothing. Petyr Baelish, as hated as he is, as disregarded, will have all the money and the skills to feed them. That’s why I say-if you really care about the people and future of Westeros, more than about some characters, if you really care what will happen to them after the war is over, if you are objective and try to pass over your personal sympathies for a greater good there is no way but to wish for Littlefinger to win.
If I made a cast for the female characters in Game of thrones why not made another for all those magnificent ladies that lived before our story began and remained in the history of the World of ice and fire? This was even more difficult than the one for GOT because i did`t had that much information about the characters and not any actress to start with. So, I basically choose whichever actress inspired me even if she could play the role or not, even if she is old or young or no longer lives. I choosed them to be suitable not practical. I hope you will enjoy my list and agree with my choices. 1. Sharra Arryn-Kristin Bauer van Straten
Looking amazing even now when she`s old, she is blond with blue eyes like a real Arryn, majestic like a real regent queen, noble, mature and so, so beautiful. You could be certain why she was called the Flower of the mountain, why she was considered in her youth the most beautiful woman in Westeros. In the picture above she is in blue and white like a real Arryn and I imagine this is the moment when she welcomed Visenya. Look at her class:
OMG, what a great lady! She looked so feminine and also so strong, so lovely and so woman. I can actually see her with silver hair and purple eyes. She also looked like a poetic nature, just like Rhaenys was, slender and graceful with loose hair, but also that kind of woman that won`t remain virtuous when you are with your other wife. Look at her in violet:3. Ceryse Hightower-Anabelle Wallis
There aren`t much known about queen Ceryse, but I like to think she was kind, docile and a good queen to Maegor. Also I think she was blonde because that`s how she is portrayed in The world of ice and fire book. Not so many arguments but I strongly feel she was Jane Seymour from The Tudors. And maybe she looked this way and was this sad before the dozen times consummated wedding night with the cruel king:4. Alys Harroway-Janet Mongomery
Considering the picture in the book and what I think she was looking and acting like I suppose Janet Mongomery is the perfect choice. Also she could play a controversial characters as in Salem, after all she was rumored to be bisexual.
5. Tyanna of the tower-Katie Mcgrath
Have you ever seen before eyes more hunting, smile more devious and a more wicked beauty that Katie Mcgrath`s in her role as Morgana? Well, I have not. She was so cruel, so ferocious, she enjoyed torturing people, such a strong and horrible evil queen in a superb way and also so tragical. She and Tyanna are the exact same thing. Two beautiful creature came from Hell. The crown fitted her indeed. Watch that criminal smile:
About queen Elinor there aren`s said much as well, I simply find Maria Valverde suitable for the role. She had to be a strong person to survive Maegor and so was her female character in Los Borgias. 7.Jeyne Westerling-Laura Haddock
Jeyne was one of the most beautiful women in Westeros and so I think is Laura Haddock in our world nowadays. She`s truly tall and willowy and gosh so, so, gorgeous. Seriously now, if she would play a role in GOT she would overshadow every beauty in Westeros even the mighty khaleesi herself.8. Rhaena Targaryen-Miranda Otto
Rhaena was a free spirit, a powerful woman one that you could not control even if ar first she was docile and she proved that by escaping Maegor, stealing her dragon and then joining Jaehaerys’s cause. So was Eowyn. Not happy in her love life, but still so strong, with such a hunger for justice and freedom. Yes, the ideal Rhaena.9. Alysanne Targaryen-Ingrid Bergman
Good Lord!!!!! How could even exist a woman so similar with queen Alysanne. Ingrid Bergman had „a long neck, a fair complexion and a high forehead. She was tall and straight, unbowed by time. She had clear, blue eyes and high cheekbones. She wore her hair in a bun, pulled back and pinned behind her ears. Age left crow’s feet around her eyes and laugh lines about her mouth, but her face never lost its strength.” Yeap, and I was quoting from the descripsion of the queen. The actress played as well a lot of characters that were „both beautiful and high-spirited, as well as charming and keenly intelligent.” ´(quoting again). She has the same mature, kind look and air as Alysanne. So what can I say? She would have been perfect. And look how royal she is in the picture above.10. Rhaenyra Targaryen-Romola Garai
I know she`s not that huge, huge beauty that Rhaenyra was, but she if you study her closer and careful you will see how suitable she is for the role. Romola Garai played a lot of female characters that were stubborn, impulsive, spoiled, had the air of intelligence, but in fact made a lot of mistakes and ended in almost madness. (Check out her roles in Daniel Deronda, Emma, Angel). Also she has the air of woman that could become fat when she grows old. But, temperamentally speaking, she played superbly a lot of Rhaenyras, women who were strong, but lost their strength and mind in horrible ambitions, in fury and wrong choices. She really looks great in „purple and maroon velvets” like Rhaenyra, in her many roles even if she „could be charming, she was quick to anger and never forgot a slight” and wears as well a lot of jewels, just like Rhaenyra again. And she plays as well a lot of roles were she has „a certain petulance to her small mouth” Like here: In the picture below I like to imagine is Rhaenyra who comes at the famous tourney when the Dance of dragons started. Perfect dress:11. Alicent Hightower-Emilie de Ravin
Don`t ask me why but I am absolutely sure that queen Alicent was brown of hair. She was also clever and lovely, so clever and lovely that she determined king Viserys to marry her. So was Belle. Yes, she has that kindness that could charm a king forever, but also a lot of mind and a lot of strength. A wordy opponent to Rhaenyra. Look at those lovely eyes. Right here we have her in that green dress that she worn when the Dance of dragons started. So majestic and elegant: And for those of you still worried that Alicent was blonde: 12. Daena Targaryen-Tabrett Bethell
She really is „defiant”, her role as Cara defined her this way. Daena ” had a fearless „I’ll dare anything” smile, she was lithe and athletic, an expert horsewoman and also a hunter and a fine archer with her short recurved bow. She was strong, beautiful, and wilful, wild almost from birth and had a dramatic dress.” And that`s exactly what Cara is, looks and acts in Legend of the seeker. And look how lovely was she as a princess as well:And that identical smile, worn even when she was in chains:
Yvonne Catterfeld has that softer, sweeter, more feminine beauty than Daena and her body is more rounded with her lips fuller. „Rhaena had soft, kind eyes and a shy, sweet smile” and so does Yvonne. In La belle et la bete she plays a princess that is exactly like Rhaena „dutiful, meek, and passive.” So perfect!14. Elaena Targaryen-Ginnifer Goodwin
She`s not a great beauty, but looks amazing with short, white hair like Elaena and also has her thin lips, and the black suits her incredibly. Plus she played Snow white in Once upon a time, a character that was wise, but wild as well, again like Elaena.15. Larra Rogare-Diane Kruger
She is indeed tall and willowy, a great beauty like Larra and a great seductress. Larra made Viserys obsessed with her and so did Diane to Paris in her role as Helen of Troy. And she worn costumes that were very similar to what is worn in Essos. And she has the same marvelous distinction as Larra. 16.Naerys Targaryen-Emily Blunt
Naerys (I` quoting) was : „had the Targaryen looks, a very fine and delicate beauty, almost unworldy. She was very slender and small, with big purple eyes and fine, pale, porcelain skin, near translucent.” So, excepting the purple eyes, Emily Blunt as queen Freya has them all. She also has that kind of fragility that Naerys should have, combined with the lack of happiness in love and the strong love for her children. And here her hair is „concealed it beneath a cowl”. Just the one:17. Falena Stokeworth-Lotte Verbeek
She has the kind of feminine courage that would allow her to „make a man from a child king. She has the charm and the mature sensualism that I imagine Falena should have. And the same craftiness and diplomacy.18. Jeyne Lothston-Isolda Dychauk
Poor girl, having to become the king`s mistress, the very same king that was rumored to be her father. And with her mother, both in the same bed. Isolda looks like being 14 years old and having that kind of fragility, but also that, with a little help from a „good” mother, she could become a great mistress by herself. I wonder which of them the king loved the most the mother of the daughter. Hard to say. And she kind of reminds me of Lotte Verbeek, don`t you think? I mean she could play the role of her daughter easily.19. Megette-Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway as Ella looks exactly as the picture of Megette in The world of ice and fire book. And acts the same. Her sweet, merry smile, her peasant charm, OMG she is too proper for the role, I simply can`t believe it. No wonder she made Aegon to simply steal her in a minute. No wonder she was called Merry Meg-her huge smile and her light happy personality are simply like a sunny day.20. Cassella Vaith-Sophia Myles
Sophia Myles as Isolde has the perfect romantic air and thinking for Cassella. Also the hair, the eyes and totally looks like a „willowy maid”. Cassella „never wed or had children, and in her old age she was consumed by the delusion that she had been Aegon’s one true love and that he would soon send for her.” Well, that`s exactly I could imagine Isolde, for she ended never loved again and, though Tristan was dead, she remained faithful to him. Both Cassella and Isolde had the same kind of sacrifice for love and their love was genuine and absolute. Here. in the following picture, I imagine she is waiting for Aegon. Poor girl: 21.Bellegere Otherys-Rosario Dawson
Indeed „as black as a pot of ink”, beautiful, wild, exotic as she was as Roxanne, the wife of Alexander the Great, I think she could push further all this qualities in order to play Bellegere. She has the looks and the talent. And she definitely could enchant a king.22. Barba Bracken-Carre Otis
Barba was described as buxom with dark hair, vivacious and not modest. Also she caught the attention of Aegon when she was only 16. That being said I think Carre Otis would have been a lovely Barba when she was very young as well. Look how lovely she is in the pictures above and how much she resembles the picture of Barba from the World of ice and fire book. And when she was 16 years old and Aegon noticed her, ignoring the brown hair, of course. She looked so innocent back then:And here dressed and hair dressed as a real lady of Westeros, again excepting the hair colour:23. Bethany Brancken-Milla Jovovich
Bethany was courageous and deceitful enough to gamble with her position as the mistress of the king and that is exactly how Milla Jovovich was as Milady. Plus she kind of resambles Carre Otis, don`t you think? In my opinion Bethany was the classical type of mistress-the one that declares she loves an old and ugly man for his power/money/social status, but in the same time decieves him with another younger, more handsome and less powerful. And Milla looks like a classical mistress with a great thirst for money and power here, won`t you say?
„Both younger and prettier than Lady Barba Bracken (albeit far less buxom), as well as more modest, Missy had a kind heart and generous nature.” I think tha is exactly what Marine Vacth inspires compared with Carre Ottis. And she resembles a little as well the picture in The World of Ice and Fire. She really has „a slender frame” as Missy was supposed to have. Look at this:And here properly dressed like an Westeroshi lady: 25.Serenei of Lys-Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman can play the cold, seductress, noble kind of lady and it would be easy for her to „embrace” the valyrian looks. She is perfect to me as Serenei. She could also be sweet as she was called Sweet Serenei”. Like here:26. Bellenora Otherys-Beyonce Knowles
Beyonce is black, but also had a lot of time blond hair like Aegon`s daughter should have and also her skin isn`t as black as Bellegere`s. She has the perfect air of a great courtesan and you won`t be surprised to heard people saying she is the most beautiful woman in the entire world as singers said about Bellenora. She is sexy, exotic and everything you could possibly ask from Bellenora. And even if she is not an actress she played in some TV series and movies. Look at her genius body, and hair and „courtesan” costume:And her glorious smile and sexy facial expression:27. Shiera Seastar-Natalia Vodianova
She is extraor dinary beautiful, has the heart-shaped face, is a beauty and a seductress just like Shiera. Also she looks a little innocent and very feminine as I personally imagine Aegon`s bastard daugh ter. And she was a pretty good actress in the few movies she played in. She`s so diapha nous here walking on this bridge, look:Plus she looks great with silver hair:28. Rohanne Webber- Evangeline Lilly
Enormous red hair, green eyes, wearing green, excellent archer, wild, smart, stubborn, sassy, undecided who she must love, Evangeline Lilly in her role as Tauriel is exactly like Rohanne Webber. And let`s don`t forget the many, many, many freckles she ha that impressed Ser Duncan the Tall so much that he dreamt her with them. In the television series „Lost”, Evangeline aka Kate is nicked by Sawyer just like that, „Freckles”.
29. Olenna Tyrell (young)-Rose Mcgowan
Olenna was supposed to be very hot in her youth, a real seductress. So I choose Rose Mcgowan because she has the Tyrelle features, a certain resemblance with Margaery played by Natalie Dormer and because she is extremely seductive. And medieval is really her kind of stuff:
30. Joanna Lannister-Michelle Pfeiffer
Michelle is blond with green eyes so, until now, the perfect Lannister. I think about her as the ideal Joanna because she`s so lady-like, so noble, with such a goodness on her face and a mature type of beauty. Perfect to charm both Tywin and Aerys. And she is gorgeous in Lannister colors:31. Ashara Deyne-Liv Tyler
Liv Tyler is indeed „tall, with long dark hair and haunting (not) violet eyes” and is a great beauty. Her beauty is so different from all the others, is a melancholic, unworldly, tragic beauty, so fragile, so easy to destroy as I think Ashara`s beauty was. Therefore, you could expect from a woman like that to commit suicide. She is perfect for the role. And look at her eyes looking purple here, they are really haunting:32. Aiysha Hart-Ariadne
She is a princess of an exotic place, with dark skin, dark eyes and dark hair, not a great beauty though. Aysha Hart in Atlantis has the kindness and sadness on her face that Elia should have and the wardrobe as well. She looks mature and unhappy like her. I could not think of any other Elia than her, she`s just to similar in looks. And, funny thing, she was the daughter of king Minos, played by Alexander Siddig, the actor who also plays Doran Martell in Game of thrones, so Elia`s brother. Here`s them together in the series:
33. Lyanna Stark-Adelaine Kane
The “Lyanna Stark” for me is Adelaide Kane in her role as Mary Stuart in Reign. She is that innocent beauty, yet wild, brave, headstrong and determined that Lyanna should be. And I choose her brunette because Jon Snow is also brunette and she has eyes very similar, good and kind like Kit Harington. You could imagine her being his actual mother. Roses also fit her superbly:And here, in blue, back home in a snowy Winterfell:
What a Targaryen! Hair as long as a waterfall and as white as snow, eyes as purple as a blackberry and skin as pale and perfect as porcelain. Check out Margarita Kareva`s other photographs. She`s an artist in this domain for sure.
I was thinking a lot about this post. Many times I tried to create a female Game of thrones cast of my own, but every time some characters gave me difficulties and I was very undecided. Now, finally, I think I made up my mind. So here`s the list with the actresses I consider to be suitable for GOT, along with the reasons why I choose them. P. S. : Let`s be clear-I love the real female cast of GOT and I do not wish for any changes, so this is just for fun.
1. Cersei Lannister-Charlize Theron
Long, wavy, blond hair, green eyes, pale skin, royal, wicked, furious, elegant, magnificent beauty, Charlize Theron in her role as queen Ravenna is the perfect Cersei Lannister. She has the same bad temper as Cersei, the same cruelty and also the same obsession for youth and beauty as Cersei has. She was as well promised to be destroyed by „another younger and more beautiful than you” wich is fun. She also learned that beauty can be a dangerous weapon („Tears aren`t a woman`s only weapon, the best one is between your legs.” said Cersei while she says, in a more raffinated way : „Beauty is power.”) She thinks as Cersei that „Love is weakness.” amd she expresses that many times to her sister in The huntsman : winter’s war. She married with a king to become queen and then she murdered him and tried to kill his child all like Cersei did. She looks and she acts like a real lioness, the lioness that George R. R. Martin made us to love to hate. She can play as well the role of the sweet, innocent girl. Look at this:
2. Catelyn Stark-Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett has the same presence of a great, untouchable lady as Catelyn Stark had. Most of her characters are strong, determined, serious and steeled like a real northen lady. She`s not particularly very beautiful or feminine, but you can feel the strength behind those blue eyes of a Tully. And be careful not to wake up her fury along with those screams of hers because she will scare you to death. In Robin Hood she warred a dagger and told her husband that if he puts a hand on her she will use it. In contrast, Catelyn puts a dagger in Littlefinger`s face when he tried to convince her to be with him. In The virgin queen she is perfect with red hair and it`s even dressed in blue and red the Tully colors. Now, seriously, she`s more beautiful than Michelle Fairley and Cat should have been beautiful. And her name is Cate which is hilarious, right?
3. Sansa Stark-Rachel Hurd-Wood
Am I the only one who has a serious problem with Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark? I must admit she plays that role superbly, but she lost a long time ago the innocence that Sansa should have. She looks like a full-grown woman and, I know that all the characters are older in the TV series than in the books, but that much older? I don`t whant a Sansa that` 13 years old, but at least one of 16-17 not one of 20. And the greatest problem is her hight-she`s taller than all the men she plays with : Joffrey, Littlefinger, Ramsay, Theon, which is no good. Rachel Hurd-Wood in her role as Laura I think accomplishes all the qualities that a real Sansa should have. She` s fragile, very innocent, red-headed with blue eyes. When I read the books I only think at her. She`s just pure perfection.4. Arya Stark-Kristen Stewart
I know Kristen Stewart is a very beautiful girl, but she looks also tomboyish and she would look even more so with the short hair of Arya. In her role as Snow White she is a fighter, one that gets her revenge for her father and gets back what is her by right just like Arya is determined. She is used living wild and she definitely knows what to do with a sword. Also if Jon Snow is black-haired in the TV adaptation she should be as well because the two of them looked very alike. Also she resembles somehow with Lyanna who was beautiful.5. Lysa Arryn-Kate Winslet
I`m well aware about you all must be thinking now-What the hell have these two women in common?! But try to make a little game of imagination. Kate Winslet is glorious at playing crazy, psychopathic characters as in her movie Revolutiona-ry road. She proved that she cold look old an ugly with a little make-up and the right attitude. She is also a well-known red-haired with blue eyes. And just remember: in the books Lysa wasn` skiny, she was fat and she was beautiful in her youth. And what`s most funny is that the two actresses hame the same name-Kate. 6. Margaery Tyrell-Natalie Portman
OMG! How do I pick them? Those thow are both named Natalie and both played the role of Anne Boleyn. But, leaving all this behind, Natalie Portman would be a cool Margaery. She has brown hair and, even more, brown eyes which is the real color of Margaery`s eyes. In The other Boleyn girl she portrayed Anne Boleyn to be smart, manipulative and fake, thirsty by power, determined to be, by all means, „The Queen”, pushed by her family and by her own interests to play the game, to be a queen that seduces and do not love her king, a tiran, like Joffrey was. With the same sharp tongue. And look how beautiful she looks in the green of house Tyrell:7. Melisandre-Angelina Jolie
She`s beauitful, sexy, exotic, persuasive, evil, seductive, manipulates the king (in that case her son), but she cares for him so much at the point she would risk her own life for him. He`s her idol and she has a tormented relationship with him. This description is suitable for queen Olympia as for Melisandre as well. Angelina Jolie looks exactly like the great wick and seductress having the same attitude and composure. Queen Olympia was also said to be a wick, so… For me Angie is the perfect Meli. Plus she looks superbly with red hair.8. Daenerys Targaryen-Isabel Lucas
Isabel Lucas is refined, beautiful with porcelain skin and very light blonde hair. She has innocence, but also strength and playing Athena she was exactly like Danenerys should be-a powerful queen who can rule the world # Goddess. And she looks fabulous with silver hair like in the picture below. In the other the dothraki queen we need.
9. Asha/ Yara Greyjoy-Keira Knightley
First of all I have to say that I definitely dislike the actress who plays Asha (Yara) Greyjoy in the series. She was supposed to be beautiful, very beautiful and young. And the actress is neither. So instead of Gemma Whelan why not choosing Keira Knightley as she is beautiful, young, talented and all. And here it comes-she is an undaunted ship commander just like Asha should be who leads hundreds of men who are ready to die for her. She is smart and bold and she could always shut your mouth with only two words. And to see the irony of fate she wears a battle costume black with gold-the Greyjoy colors. I saw a lot of movies with Keira Knightley and she is so proper with this kind of role that every time when I read an Asha chapter from ASOIAF I imagine her all the time. Unfortunately HBO always brings me back to reality. Look what a great leader she is for her men and how fearless on her keel, like she is a real iron lady, with the sea in her very veins. And she is a very beautiful brunette as well (because she is brunette in the books) In the next picture she looks like I imagine Asha to be when she is Staniss`s prisoner. Sitting in a corner, surrounded by snowflakes. She was a huge warrior queen in this movie as well.
10. Brienne of Thart-Tilda Swinton
I really see Tilda being Brienne. She has the same male look of Brienne, she`s very tall and blond. Also she can look really fireless with a sword like in her role as Jadis from The chronicles of Narnia. And she really has that boyish short hair cut, right?11. Ygritte-Jessica Chastain
Red headed, smart, a great warrior in ice and snow, with a sharp tongue (always teasing her lover), with bow and arrows this is exactly what describes this two female characters. And look how concentrated they both are with that bow and arrow. And for God’s sake! Remember that Ygritte never missed a target and when she shuts Jon Snow he realises that she actually „missed” just in order to live him alive? Well, that’s the exact same thing that Sara does to her Eric. Plus all that common story in which she thinks she was betrayded and tries to hates him for that. I truly think that the love story from The huntsman was inspired by Jon and Ygritte. So what`s left to be said? BTW, the love scene in the cave between Sara and Eric from The Hutsman : Winter`s war? Did it look familiar to you? Well maybe because of this :
12. Gilly-Amy Adams
Amy Adams will do for a perfect Gilly. She has some kind of innocence about her and also can look quite tormented and she is pretty as well. She is also very good at playing silly, clumsy girls who know nothing and strike to adapt from a different world to civilization. Like she did in Enchanted. Everything was so strange and unknown to her. And she treated everything and everyone so funny just like Gilly does considering all that she does`n know as magic. Like here (kind of like when Gilly called Sam a wizard because he was able to read) :
13. Rebecca Ferguson-Dalla
Just like the wife of Mance Rayder, Rebecca Ferguson in The white queen is a blonde, beautiful yet mature woman, clever and always ready to give her husband some great advice. Also pregnancy looks great on her, don`t you think?
14. Val- Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is the perfect Val with that perfect blonde hair of hers and those blue eyes. She also has „high sharp cheekbones” and she is „she is slender with a full bosom”. As Jon Snow says about Val she „does not need to smile; she would have turned men’s heads in any court in the wide world.” Plus she can also play powerful characters, women who fight and stand up for their believes. A true princess, but a wild one. And look how beautiful she is in white fur: 15. Osha-Eva Green
This Osha would be just gorgeous. Eva Green is so wild in every movie she plays in, savage and dangerous like a wolf, with the exact same attitude and she always know how to fight, literally. And she looks fabulous with blowzy hair. Just like her role as Morgan in Camelot. And it will also be easy to understand why Theon wanted her so badly. Because she is absolutely amazing. The kind of woman that makes you feel oblige to say : „OMG, what a woman!!!” Not to mention that in Camelot she also had knowledges about magic as Osha has in Game of thrones. 16. Meera Reed-Jennifer Lawrence
She is definitely a fighter. One that has in nocence and also is a modest girl. She`s not that beautiful, but she can be very attractive as well. In her role of Katniss she has the character and temper of Meera Reed. She`s got the face and the same personality. And she` s so familiar with forest and hunting. 17. Mya Stone-Michelle Ryan
She is the per fect Bara theon girl: huge blue eyes (which I con sider her best feature, like were Mya`s eyes considered) and Mya`s short, black hair. She` tall as well and looks lusty, exactly like Robert`s bastard daughter. In Merlin the forest looks like being in her very veins.
18. Myranda-Mila Kunis
Even if we speak about Ramsay` s Myranda or about Myranda Royce, Mila Kunis is the perfect answer. She is naughty, daring and knows exactly what her interests are. She looks like the kind of girl which will bite you until you bleed/the kind of girl that you can die while making love to it. And she played a lot of characters that were lacking conscious, that were rake.
19. Dacey Mormont-Bridget Regan
Bridget Regan as Kahlan was just perfect to portrait Dacey. Lanky and brunette, a fantastic and bra-ve warrior. And, God, how much she looks like the fanart near her! Also, as you may see down bellow, exactly like George R. R. Martin described her in the books, „at ease in a lady’s garb or in leather armor.” And she „remains elegant in dress and dance.” 20. Jeyne Westerling-Tamsin Egerton
Ok, guys, so we`re all aware to the fact that Talisa Stark, from HBO`s Game of thrones, is not the real queen in the North as her character doesn`t apear in the books and is replaced by a normal lady from Westeros, Jeyne Westerling, far more girly and not very strong, which Robb doesn`t seems to love her so crazy like in the series, and who never has a baby and never dies, being absent at the Red wedding. So, I wondered, if HBO would have respected the books, who had been more proper for the role of Jeyne? And I think I`ve got the answer in Tamsin Egerton`s Guinevere from Camelot. She would have been perfect. But comparing, which
21. Roslin Frey-Emily Browning
She`s the beautiful child that will suffer so much from the world. Emily Browning is like Roslin, (and now I`m quoting): „small. She has very white skin, a pretty face with a small chin, delicate nose, and big brown eyes. Her hair is brown and reaches her waist.” She looks and acts like a gentle maid, who knows how to endure. So, Emily Browning is perfect, right?
22. Ros-Julia Roberts
A crazy, shame less girl, who also suffers a lot, but knows exactly how to hide it. This was Julia Roberts in Pretty woman and this Ros in Game of thrones. A prostitute in the same time, Julia knows how to nail this kind of role. She looks mature and beautiful and. though heer character might be a whore, but is one that could drive you mad about her. And she has that huge, amazing red hair. Magnificent to play Ros. And she would be just gorgeous in one of those colorful, sparkling, nasty costumes that I imagine are worn in Littlefinger`s brothel :
23. Shae-Audrey Tautou
Audrey Tautou has that sweet innocence that Shae from the books has and not the one from the TV series. She is funny, very pretty, apparently inoffensive and she looks just like a girl of 18 years old should look plus Shae`s large, dark, beautiful eyes. You won`t excpect her to betray you or anything like that and I am sure she would look lovely with Tyrion as a couple. She has that inoffensive air along with the determination of a girl that wants to become something in life like she had in „Coco avant Chanel”. And she also has that brunnete hair and weaa the same haircut as Shae from ASOIAF worn. She looks, even in real life, more Shae than the Shae from the TV series herself. Plus she is a great, great actress that would, no doubt, nail this role. And here we have her wearing a pink dress, reminding me of the pink dress of Shae:
24. Missandei-Priyanka Chopra
In The World of Ice and Fire women of the Naath island are considered to be the most beautiful in the world. So why not choose a former Miss Univers for the job? Priyanka Chopra isn`t just extraordinary beautiful, but she suits the description of a Naathian woman as well : she has brown hair, brown eyes, olive skin and is so exotic. Just admire her Missandeish style :
25. Myrcella Baratheon-Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Syefried is in my opinion one of the most beautiful women alive. She has that sweet innocence on her face, but also you can feel how dangerous that innocence could be for you. She has the pale skin and that amazing blonde hair that Myrcella should have. And for all of those Myrcellas out there she is the only one that has green eyes like a true Lannister. You can imagine her turning into Cersei. And what an amazing pink, etherial girl she is. And those long, golden waves.
26. Ellaria Sand-Penelope Cruz
She is the same stubborn, voluptuous, spicy, fiery girl who doesn`t give a shit about what the world may say. Seductive, exotic and, most of all, spanish, the exactly spanish accent that Ellaria needs. She has black hair, black eyes, brown skin, she is strong determined and extremely passionate. The perfect lover for the reckless Oberyn Martell. And look how gorgeous she is with a snake around her. Literally :
27. Obara Sand-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Ok, I know that Obara was supposed to be an ugly woman, but come on, how could I resist it? When she in The last legion is a fearless, dressed in armour warrior, with the perfect dornish looks and also the eyes of the daughters of Oberyn Martell. I mean, why shouldn`t we have such a splendid Obara like the one bellow, walking on the sand of Dorne?
Irina Shayk matches perfectly Nymeria Sand`s description in the books: seductive, voluptuous, exotic and a great lady. She has indeed „high cheekbones, and full lips” is ” slim and slender as a willow, with straight black hair”. In „Hercules : The Thracian wars” she plays Megarah, a woman who looks exactly like lady Nym. She would be just perfect for the role with all her arabic air. Ans she also has a similar air with Aishwarya I would der to say. Look at the picture above with that braid, she is just like you would imagine Nymeria . And then comes the TV series version…
29. Tyene Sand-Holliday Grainger
If there is anything you may say, without being wrong, about Holly Grainger is that she`s sweet as summer strawberries, fair with golden hair, with blue eyes and an almost otherworldly innocence about her. Sounds familiar to you? Well maybe that`s because it`s the exactly same description that Tyene Sand has on her page from A wiki of Ice and Fire. In her roles as Sophia in Merlin or Lucrezia Borgia in The Borgias she is also like Tyene being „treacherous, while maintaining a sweet and pious persona”. She appears so pure and innocent with that ethereal beauty of hers, but in fact she`s sly and, sometimes, even wicked. She also knows a lot about poison as Tyene does. unfortunately for us we will never going to see in GOT the real Tyene Sand. The one in the series comparing to her book version is awful. I mean, really guys?
30. Arianne Martell-Janina Gavankar
I would love to see Arianne Martell in Game of thrones, especially Janina Gavankar being her. She is the perfect Arianne Martell, a seductress with „olive skin, large dark eyes and long, thick black hair that falls in ringlets to the middle of her back. She has full lips and round ripe breasts with huge dark nipples.” Literally, she has shown that in some TV series when she appeared naked. Her looks makes you think that you will never be able to resist her, that she will play you the way she wants, completely shameless. And I should say Janina Gavankar looks exactly like all the fanarts that I found on the internet with princess Arianne. And, trust me, I found a lot. Plus to mention that there are a lot of people out there who wanted her to be the heiress of Dorne. Unfortunately we will never be that lucky which is a shame. Dorne was poorly treated in the TV adaptation of A song of Ice and Fire. And those huge, huge, huge eyes…
31. Taena Merryweather-Monica Belluci
Mature, sexy, black hair, dark eyes, absolutely unbelievable. Monica Belluci, no other than Taena Merryweather. She was really something if she determined Cersei to have a relation with her. She says about Taena (and it`s so available about Monica as well) : „The Myrish woman was too beautiful by half; long-legged and full-breasted, with smooth olive skin, ripe lips, huge dark eyes, and thick black hair that always looked as if she’d just come from bed. She even smells of sin, like some exotic lotus.” Also an extremely dangerous, smart, cunning woman who knows exactly what she wants. Her sensuality is something you will never forget. We can say about Monica the exact words that Jaime Lannister said about Taena : „Every step is a seduction” And, seriously, who wouldn’t want to be able to compare the two huge beauties that Charlize Theron and Monica Belluci are? I am already smelling the fight of fans about „Who is more beautiful?”
I played the three games of Azalea`s dolls : Game of thrones, Lord of the rings and The Tudors, and I`ve created, as much as possible, a gallery in honor of all those important, beautiful, powerfull women of the history of Westeros whom we`ll never get to see and apear as characters only in The world of ice and fire book. I hope you`ll like my work. P.S. : Under the pictures I put a description about their appearance, personality and story from the official Wikipedia of ice and fire. Enjoy it!
Character : Sharra Arryn, known as the Flower of the Mountain, was Queen Regent of the Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, ruling in the name of her son, the boy-king Ronnel Arryn, during the invasion of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryen. Sharra was regarded as the most beautiful woman of Westeros. Story : After Aegon launched his invasion and made his intentions known to the rulers of the seven independent kingdoms of Westeros, Sharra sent a portrait of herself to him and offered her hand in marriage with the condition Aegon would make her son his heir. Despite being ten years older than Aegon, she was still regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the land, yet Aegon refused. The Vale scored a victory against the invaders in the Battle of Gulltown, though the Arryn fleet was burned afterwards by Visenya Targaryen. With the Arryn fleet destroyed, the Sistermen revolted against the Eyrie. As other regions of Westeros fell to Aegon, Sharra amassed the Vale army at the Bloody Gate. However, Aegon sent Visenya to the Eyrie riding her dragon Vhagar. When Sharra returned to the Eyrie she found her son sitting on Visenya’s lap and asking if he could ride the dragon with Visenya. Sharra bent the knee afterward. The Arryns were declared Wardens of the East and Defenders of the Vale.
Character : Queen Rhaenys Targaryen was the younger of Aegon Targaryen’s sister-queens. Rhaenys was Aegon’s favourite sister-wife, though ( it was whispered) she may have dabbled with other bed-mates.Rhaenys was a year or two younger than Aegon. She had the silver-gold Targaryen hair which she kept long and wore loose. Physically she was more slender and graceful than her sister. She was known as less stern and more playful and curious than her older sister, Visenya. She was also interested in music and poetry. She loved to ride her dragon Meraxes and spent twice as much time riding than her siblings. She surrounded herself with comely young men and there were whispers that she entertained men while Aegon was with Visenya – yet Aegon spent ten nights with Rhaenys for every one with Visenya.
Story : The youngest of three siblings, Rhaenys was born on Dragonstone to Lord Aerion Targaryen and his wife, Lady Valaena Velaryon. Even though it was traditional for Targaryens to marry their older sister, Rhaenys was married to her brother Aegon, as was her older sister, Visenya. It was said that Aegon had married Visenya out of duty, and Rhaenys out of desire.Rhaenys had been a dragonrider to the dragon Meraxes since before she was wed.Eventually, her brother became interested in conquering Westeros, and when he crowned himself King, Rhaenys and Visenya became his queens, and joined him in conquering the Seven Kingdoms.
In 2 BC, Lord Aegon Targaryen began his War of Conquest, and both Rhaenys and Visenya participated, riding their dragons in battle. The Conquest began when a modest Targaryen army put ashore on the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. While Aegon put up a palisade around the highest of three hills, Rhaenys and Visenya were sent out to secure the submission of the castles nearby. Rhaenys flew on Meraxes to Rosby, which yielded peacefully to her.
When the Aegonfort was finished, Aegon was crowned in front of old supporters and newly defeated enemies. Visenya placed a Valyrian circlet on his head, and Rhaenys hailed him as „Aegon, First of His Name, King of All Westeros, and Shield of His People”. Within days of this coronation, the armies were sent out again, and Rhaenys on Meraxes accompanied Orys Baratheon and his army on their way to Storm’s End. Some of the bannermen to Storm’s End, the Lords Errol, Fell, and Buckler, resisted Orys’ advancement, cutting down more than a thousand men before fading back into the trees. Rhaenys answered them, by burning the woods using Meraxes. This killed Lord Errol, but the Lords Fell and Buckler survived, and sent word to Storm’s End about Rhaenys and Meraxes. King Argilac Durrandon, having heard what fate had befallen Harren the Black, decided to march from Storm’s End to meet the Targaryen host, instead of awaiting to be burned in his castle. Rhaenys, on Meraxes, witnessed how he departed from Storm’s End.
When the two armies met, a storm began, preventing Meraxes from flying. When the Durrandon host broke through the Baratheon host, however, they came across Meraxes on the ground. Rhaenys had the vanguard burned. After the death of King Argillac, Rhaenys flew Meraxes into Storm’s End to parley. Argilac’s daughter and heir, Argella, refused to surrender the castle.
Rhaenys went to join Aegon and Visenya at the Stoney Sept when the kings from the Reach and the westerlandsjoined forces against them. On top of Meraxes, Rhaenys so participated in the battle that would later be called the Field of Fire. This would be the first and only time when all threedragons were unleashed together in the war.
After the Field of Fire, Aegon went north to deal with the Starks. Meanwhile, Rhaenys led the invasion of Dorne. Ignoring the Dornish host in the Prince’s Pass, she flew directly to Vaith, but found the castle empty and abandoned, with only old women and children being present in the town besides it. In Godsgrace and the Planky Town, she found exactly the same.
Rhaenys continued her journey to Sunspear, where she spoke with the eighty-year old Meria Martell, Princess of Dorne.
Meria: „I will not fight you, nor will I kneel to you. Dorne has no king. Tell your brother that.”
Rhaenys: „I shall, but we will come again, Princess, and the next time we shall come with fire and blood.”
Meria: „Your words. Ours are Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. You may burn us, my lady…but you will not bend us, break us, or make us bow. This is Dorne. You are not wanted here. Return at your peril.”
After this, the queen and the princess parted ways, and Dorne remained unconquered, as the only one out of the Seven Kingdoms.
With Aegon’s War of Conquest at an end in 1 AC, Rhaenys, Aegon and Visenya took residence at the Aegonfort. In 7 AC, Rhaenys gave birth to the first of Aegon’s children: Prince Aenys, who was named his fathers heir. It would be Rhaenys’ line who would eventually continue the line of dragonkings, as fifteen out of the sixteen kings that came after Aegon I descended from her line.Daenerys Targaryen is the last of her descendants who still bears the Targaryen name, although her progeny can still be found amongst Baratheons, Martells, and others. Her only child, Aenys, became the second King to sit on the Iron Throne.
During the early years of her brother’s reign, Rhaenys often aided Aegon in his efforts to win the respect of his vassals and the smallfolk. The smallfolk were a special concern for Rhaenys. She was fond of singers and bards as well. In addition, she arranged all kinds of marriages between far-flung houses, including the marriage between Lord Ronnel Arryn and a daughter of Lord Torrhen Stark.
Rhaenys was also responsible for the rule of six, established by Rhaenys while Aegon was on a progress. This law declared that only six blows were allowed to be struck by a husband to his wife, when she had been unfaithful; one blow for each of the Seven, save the Stranger. As the cause of her rule had been a husband who had struck his unfaithful wife a hundred times, causing her death, the Queen declared that the man had struck his wife unlawfully ninety-four of those times, and the woman’s death brothers were allowed to punish the husband equally.
In addition, it was Rhaenys who urged Aegon to make it unlawful for the ironborn to steal woman throughout the Seven Kingsdoms.
In 4 AC, Aegon I decided to start another campaign against Dorne. Rhaenys participated in this war as well, on Meraxes. She led the first assault on Dorne, seizing castles and burning Planky Town while approaching Sunspear. The Dornish resisted stubbernly, though not by giving open battle. When Rhaenys and Aegon eventually reached Sunspear, Princess Meria Martell, as well as most others, had fled. With Lord Rosby in place as castellan of Sunspear, and Lord Harlan Tyrell in charge of a host to fight the last revolts, Rhaenys and Aegon returned to King’s Landing. Yet, when they had just reached the city, Dorne revolted, leading to the deaths of both Lord Rosby, by the hand of Princess Meria herself, and Lord Harlan Tyrell, who vanished with his entire army.
The Targaryens returned to Dorne once more, unleashing their dragons. In 10 AC, Rhaenys, on Meraxes, flew against Hellholt. It was there where the Dornish won their biggest victory, when a bolt from a scorpion pierced Meraxes through the eye. The dragon fell from the sky, with Rhaenys on its back, destroying half the castle. It is not certain, whether Rhaenys outlived Meraxes or not. There are those who say that Rhaenys lost her seat, and fell to her death, while there are others who claim that Rhaenys was crushed to death beneath Meraxes in the castle yard. A third option, claimed by a few accounts, state that Rhaenys survived the fall, and that she died a slow death, being tortured by the Ullers. Due to the uncertainty about Rhaenys’s exact death, history records that she died in 10 AC at Hellholt in Dorne. Her body was never returned to King’s Landing.
Character : Lady Ceryse Hightower was a member of House Hightower and was the daughter of Lord Martyn Hightower of Oldtownduring the reign of Aenys I Targaryen. She was the niece of the High Septon at the time. She eventually married Maegor the Cruel, becoming his first (of many) wives.
Story : Ceryse’s uncle, the High Septon, became livid when Visenya Targaryen suggested that her son Maegor wed Rhaena Targaryen. To please the Faith of the Seven, King Aenys I Targaryen refused the betrothal and instead wed Maegor to Lady Ceryse in 25 AC. Their marriage failed to produce any children, even if the king claimed that he have consummated the marriage a dozen time in their wedding night and Maegor eventually took further brides (though all of them likewise did not produce him an heir).Ceryse died in 45 AC of a sudden illness, though it was rumored she was killed at Maegor the Cruel’s command.
Character : Queen Alys Harroway was a lady of House Harroway and was the second of the many wives of King Maegor I, the only child of KingAegon I Targaryen and Queen Visenya Targaryen. Story : Alys secretly married Maegor in 39 AC and the ceremony had been led by Queen Visenya. When Maegor choose exile, Alys accompanied him.Her father, Lord Lucas Harroway, served as lord of Harrenhal and Maegor’s Hand of the King. After having given birth to a deformed baby in 44 AC, Maegor had Alys, her father, her bed maids, Grand Maester Desmond who assisted with the birth, and every member of House Harroway executed, being convinced by his third wife, Tyanna of the tower, that the child had come forth from a secret affair of Alys.
Character : Tyanna, also known as Tyanna of Pentos and Tyanna of the Tower, was a Pentoshi woman who became the third wife of King Maegor I Targaryen.
Story : The beautiful Tyanna became Maegor’s lover during his exile in Pentos; she was rumored to be Queen Alys Harroway’s paramour as well.
After Maegor was crowned king, his rule was challenged by the Faith of the Seven with a trial of seven. Maegor won but was grievously wounded. Twenty-eight days later Alys arrived from Pentos with Tyanna. The Dowager Queen, Visenya Targaryen, after meeting with Tyanna, gave the king over to her care alone—a fact that troubled Maegor’s supporters. Tyanna married Maegor in 42 AC, but this marriage was just as barren as the previous two marriages were.
The Dowager Queen died in 44 AC. In the confusion after her death, Aenys I Targaryen’s widow, Queen Alyssa Velaryon, slipped away from Dragonstone with her children, as well as with the sword Dark Sister. Alyssa and Aenys’s second son, Prince Viserys, had been kept at the Red Keep as the king’s squire, however, and he suffered for her flight. He died after nine days of questioning at the hands of Tyanna of the Tower.
Tyanna served as mistress of whisperers on her husband’s small council. When Queen Alys gave birth to a monstrosity in 48 AC, Queen Tyanna convinced Maegor that it was due to Alys having secret affairs. This led to the extinction of House Harroway.
Tyanna eventually confessed her responsibility for the abominations that were born of Maegor’s seed, claiming she had poisoned his other brides. She was killed by Maegor’s own hand in 48 AC, her heart cut out with the sword Blackfyre and thrown to his dogs.
Elinor Costayne : Queen Elinor Costayne was a member of House Costayne and the youngest of the Black Brides of King Maegor I Targaryen. Story : Elinor was married to Ser Theo Bolling and had already given her husband three children. Theo was arrested by knights of the Kingsguard, accused of conspiring with Queen Alyssa Velaryon to place her son, Prince Jaehaerys, on the throne, and was executed, all in the same day. After seven days of mourning, Elinor, who was 19 years old, was summoned to wed Maegor .She became pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn abomination said to have been born eyeless and with small wings. She was one of the two wives who survived the king.
Jeyne Westerling : Queen Jeyne Westerling was a member of House Westerling. She was one of the Black Brides of King Maegor I Targaryen.
Story : Tall and willowy, Lady Jeyne was a renowned beauty and had been wed to Lord Alyn Tarbeck, who died with the rebels at the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye. Jeyne gave him a posthumous son.
Jeyne was being courted by the son of the Lord of Casterly Rock when King Maegor I sent for her to be wed to him along with Lady Elinor Costayne and Princess Rhaena Targaryen in a single ceremony. In 47 AC she was with child, but three moons before the child was due her labor began, and from her womb came another stillborn monster. She did not survive the child for long.
Rhaena Targaryen : Queen Rhaena Targaryen, one of the Black Brides of King Maegor I Targaryen, was the eldest of the six children of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. She was a dragonrider and rode the dragon Dreamfyre.
Story : Soon after her birth Queen Visenya Targaryen proposed marrying Rhaena to her uncle, Prince Maegor, but the High Septon mounted a vigorous protest. Maegor was married to the niece of the High Septon instead, Lady Ceryse Hightower.
In 41 AC King Aenys I Targaryen arranged the marriage of Rhaena to her brother, Prince Aegon, which caused an uprising of the Faith. The marriage to her brother lasted for only three years, during which she gave birth to twin daughters: Princess Aerea and Princess Rhalla.
When King Aenys I, Rhaena’s father, died, Rhaena and her husband were being besieged at Crakehall by members of the Faith. Instead of Aegon becoming King, Dowager Queen Visenya brought Prince Maegor back from Essos, and made sure he was crowned King.
Prince Aegon and Princess Rhaena sought refuge from King Maegor the Cruel. At one point, Lord Lyman Lannister protected the Prince and Princess under his roof, extending guest right and refusing all the king’s demands to turn them over. Yet Lord Lyman did not pledge his swords to Aegon and Rhaena.
When Prince Aegon died in 43 AC, Rhaena became a widow. Rhaena took refuge on Fair Isle, under the protection ofLord Farman, who hid her and her daughters. It was Tyanna, one of Maegor’s queens, who found them. In 47 AC, Rhaena was forced to wed Maegor. As she was one of the three women who was wed to Maegor under force, who had been proven to be fertile, Rhaena would become known as one of the „Black Brides”.
When Rhaena learned that her youngest brother, Prince Jaehaerys, was claiming the throne for himself, she fled King’s Landing on her dragon Dreamfyre, stealing Blackfyre away as her king and husband slept, to join Jaehaerys’s cause.
Character : Queen Alysanne Targaryen, known as Good Queen Alysanne, was the queen consort of her brother, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Alysanne was a dragonrider whose mount was Silverwing. According to semi-canon sources, Alysanne was slim of waist and small of breast, with a long neck, a fair complexion and a high forehead. She was tall and straight, unbowed by time. She had clear, blue eyes and high cheekbones. In old age her hair turned white as snow. She wore it in a bun, pulled back and pinned behind her ears. Age left crow’s feet around her eyes and laugh lines about her mouth, but her face never lost its strength. She often wore a slimmer, more feminine version of her brother-husband’s crown at court. Alysanne, was also well loved throughout the realm, being both beautiful and high-spirited, as well as charming and keenly intelligent. She was beloved by the common people of Westeros, she loved them in return, and she was renowned for her charities.
Story : Alysanne was a daughter of Aenys I Targaryen and Alyssa Velaryon. She had five siblibgs: an older sister, Rhaena, three older brothers, Aegon, Viserys, Jaehaerys, and a younger sister, Vaella.
When her father, King Aenys I, died, her uncle Maegor I Targaryen ascended the throne. This caused a war between Maegor and Alysanne’s brother, Aegon. Alysanne, her mother, and her brother became captives on Dragonstone. In 44 AC, when Queen Regent Visenya Targaryen died, Alysanne, Alyssa and Jaehaerys fled Dragonstone.
In 50 AC Alysanne married her eldest surviving brother, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.Their marriage lasted forty-six years (the years of the First and Second Quarrel are not counted as their married years), until Alysanne died.
Alysanne and Jaehaerys had thirteen children, though only nine lived until adulthood. Her youngest daughter, PrincessGael, was also her favorite. When Gael killed herself in 99 AC, Alysanne, in her grief, died within a year.
There are two estrangements recorded during the marriage of Alysanne and Jaehaerys, which both lasted no more than a year or two. The Second Quarrel began in 92 AC, when Jaehaerys decided to pass over his granddaughter Rhaenys, the only heir of his deceased eldest son Aemon, in favor of his son Baelon. Alysanne believed there was no reason to favor a man over a woman, and thought that, if Jaehaerys believe women to be of less use, he would have no need of her. The couple reconciled two years later, in 94 AC, with the help of their daughter, Septa Maegelle. Jaehaerys outlived Alysanne by a few years, and it was said that the grief caused by their parting hung over his court.
In her youth Alysanne was a fine archer and hunter, and loved to fly atop her dragon to all the distant parts of the realm.
As a Queen, Alysanne was well loved by the people in the Seven Kingdoms. She had great influence over Jaehaerys, as she was his most trusted counselor. She convinced him to abolish the lord’s right to the first night. when the couple visitedthe North, the queen travelled to the Wall on her dragon Silverwing. According to stories she was so impressed by the bravery of the Night’s Watch that she asked Jaehaerys to double the size of the Watch’s land. The acquired land was called the New Gift. During her visit she stayed in castle Snowgate, which was re-named Queensgate in her honour, to thank Alysanne for giving the Night’s Watch jewels so they could build a new castle, Deep Lake, as a replacement for the huge and ruinously costly Nightfort, as well as to thank her for winning them the New Gift.
There is a sad song, „Alysanne”, that may be about her. It is possible the galley Queen Alysanne was named after her as well.
Alysanne and her husband had thirteen children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. The bulk of Alysanne’s children predeceased her, with the loss of Princess Gael in 99 AC being a particularly heavy blow that was believed by many to have hastened her own death.
Alysanna had five known grandchildren, four of them living to adulthood: Aemon’s daughter Princess Rhaenys, who married Lord Corlys Velaryon, Baelon’s sons, Prince Viserys, who would later be crowned as King Viserys I, and Prince Daemon Targaryen, and Daella’s daughter, Lady Aemma Arryn, who would later become Queen of the Seven Kingdoms through her marriage to her cousin, Prince Viserys. Another son of Baelon and Alyssa, Prince Aegon, presumably died young.
Rhaenyra Targaryen : Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, cheered as the Realm’s Delight when she was young and later called the Half-Year Queen, was the first-born child of King Viserys I Targaryen. Her claim to the Iron Throne was challenged by her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen, sparking the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. She was the mother of two kings, Aegon III and Viserys II.
Rhaenyra’s personal sigil was the normal Targaryen heraldry (a three-headed red dragon on a black field), quartered with the moon-and-falcon sigil of House Arryn (for her mother Aemma Arryn), and the silver seahorse on sea green ofHouse Velaryon (for her first husband Laenor Velaryon, as well as for the Velaryons in general, who were among her major supporters). During the Dance, her faction used her personal heraldry as their battle-flag.
Rhaenyra had her family’s Valyrian looks, wearing her silver-gold hair in a long braid in the manner of Aegon I’s warrior wife, Visenya, though Rhaenyra was no warrior herself. In her youth she was described as the most beautiful maiden in all the realm. She always dressed richly, favoring purple and maroon velvets and golden Myrish lace in intricate patterns. Her bodice often glittered with pearls and diamonds, and there were always rings on her fingers. Whenever she was anxious, she would turn them compulsively, round and round.
She was very proud and stubborn, and there was a certain petulance to her small mouth. Rhaenyra later in life after six pregnancies became a stout woman, with a thick waist and a large bosom. She gained a lot of weight after her first three pregnancies, even though she was only 20.
Though Rhaenyra could be charming, she was quick to anger and never forgot a slight. During the Dance of the Dragons, she wore her father’s crown. Rhaenyra was King Viserys I’s only living child by his first wife, Aemma of House Arryn. She grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros.
Story : Born in 97 AC, Rhaenyra was the only living child of King Viserys I Targaryen by his first wife, Lady Aemma of House Arryn. Rhaenyra had two brothers, both who died in the cradle.
Rhaenyra became a dragonrider at the age of seven, when she flew into the sky on the back of a young dragon, whom she named Syrax. A year later, when she was eight, Rhaenyra became a cupbearer for her father, serving him at the table, at tourneys, and at court. King Viserys was seldom seen without Rhaenyra, since then.
At a young age, Rhaenyra became enamored with her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen. Daemon, who often went on trips across the sea, brought back exotic gift for her. In 105 AC, Ser Criston Cole was named to the Kingsguard. Cole had made an impression on the court the year before, when he won a tourney and crowned Rhaenyra the Queen of Love and Beauty, after which he begged for her favor to wear in the joust. A charming man, he caught the eye of many ladies at court, Rhaenyra included. She became smitten by him, and called him „my white knight”. When Rhaenyra begged her father to name Cole her personal shield and protector, Viserys agreed. From that moment on, Cole would always wear Rhaenyra’s favor in the lists, and be her protector during public events.
Late in the year 105 AC, Rhaenyra’s mother, Aemma, went into labour. Aemma died birthing Rhaenyra’s second brother, and the boy died a day later. King Viserys, since then, proclaimed Rhaenyra his heir, having all the lords of the Seven Kingdoms swear fealthy to her, promising to honor and defend her rights of succession. In addition, Rhaenyra was named Princess of Dragonstone.
King Viserys remarried in 106 AC, to Lady Alicent Hightower, and stepmother and stepdaughter initially got along very well. That changed quickly, when Alicent birthed the king two sons, Aegon in 107 AC and Aemond in 110 AC, yet Viserys did not proclaim either boy his heir. People continued to ask Viserys about the succession, though Viserys was unwilling to discuss it. Ser Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father and Visery’s Hand, was sent away from court for pushing the issue too much, but even after he left, clearly two parties formed at court: the party of the Queen, and the party of the Princess.
In 111 AC, a great tourney was held at King’s Landing on the fifth anniversary of King Visery’s marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, the queen wore a green gown, whilst Princess Rhaenyra dressed dramatically in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became the custom to refer to “greens” and “blacks” when talking of the queen’s party and the party of the princess, respectively. In the tourney itself, the blacks had much the better of it when Ser Criston Cole, wearing Princess Rhaenyra’s favor, unhorsed all of the queen’s champions, including two of her cousins and her youngest brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower.
According to the accounts of Septon Eustace, prior to her turning sixteen Rhaenyra lost her virginity to her uncle Daemon Targaryen after he seduced her. The account of the fool Mushroom is much more scandalous than the account of Eustace. Mushroom claims that Daemon gave Rhaenyra lessons on how to seduce and please a man, lessons in which Mushroom insists he took part as well. Mushroom’s account differs from Eustace’s account, in that Mushroom claims Rhaenyra remained a virgin during these lessons. According to Mushroom, Rhaenyra received those lessons from Daemon because she was in love with Ser Criston Cole, and wanted him to see her as a women, no longer as a girl. Whichever account is true (Grand Maester Runciter simply claims that the two brothers quarrelled), King Viserys sent his brother into exile.
At the age of sixteen, in 113 AC, Rhaenyra took possession of Dragonstone. She married Ser Laenor Velaryon in 114 AC, though it took the threat of removing her status as heir to the throne to convince her to accept the marriage, as Rhaenyra did not feel the need to marry a man with interests like Laenors. She was reported to have stated that „My half brothers would be more to his taste”, to her father.
Laenor and Rhaenyra had three sons together: Jacaerys ‘Jace’ Velaryon, Lucerys ‘Luke’ Velaryon, and Joffrey ‘Joff’ Velaryon. All were near adulthood and had dragons of their own when Rhaenyra’s father, Viserys I, died. It was rumored that those sons of Rhaenyra’s were actually fathered by her lover, Ser Harwin „Breakbones” Strong as all three of them were born with brown hair even though Laenor and Rhaenyra both had light silver/gold hair. The truth of the parentage of Rhaenyra’s three eldest children is still unclear.
Rhaenyra’s other sons, the future Aegon III and Viserys II, were fathered by her second husband, her uncle Prince Daemon Targaryen, the most experienced warrior of his time. They married after the deaths of Daemon’s second wife and Rhaenyra’s (rumored) lover Harwin Strong. The news of their wedding caused a great scandal at the court of King’s Landing and made Rhaenyra father livid. It took some time before Viserys and Daemon reconciled again.
Her father’s intention that she should follow him on the Iron Throne was confirmed by proclamation and the will of Viserys I.
Rhaenyra gave birth to a deformed stillborn girl, Visenya, very soon after learning of her father (King Viserys I)’s death.
After the death of her father, King Viserys I, his will stated that Princess Rhaenyra would succeed him. However, Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King and Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and possibly the former lover of Rhaenyra, defied the king’s will and instead crowned Rhaenyra’s half-brother, Alicent’s son Aegon II, who was ten years younger. This brought about a Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, in which dragonriders fought each other; during the war Rhaenyra rode her dragon, Syrax.
At the time of her father’s death, Rhaenyra was on Dragonstone awaiting the birth of her sixth child. The Green conspirators in King’s Landing ensured that the news did not reach her until after all her supporters in the Red Keep were dead or imprisoned, and Aegon II’s coronation had already occurred. When news did reach her, she went into a black fury and went into early labor, producing a deformed, stillborn daughter. She blamed this tragedy on the enemies who had stolen her crown. After Ser Steffon Darklyn of the Kingsguard arrived on Dragonstone with some other Black supporters who had fled the Green coup, bringing her father’s crown with them, Rhaenyra had her own coronation.
To gain more support to take the crown from her brother, Rhaenyra sent her son Jace on his dragon to treat with the Arryns, Manderlys, and Starks, and her son Luke to treat with Lord Borros Baratheon at Storm’s End. Luke’s mission was thought to be the safer, but he arrived at Storm’s End to find Queen Alicent’s younger son Aemond already there. Aemond, riding Vhagar, killed Luke over Shipbreaker Bay as he attempted to leave after failing to gain Lord Borros’ allegiance. The news of Luke’s death devastated his mother.
Rhaenyra took the capital and sat in the throne for roughly half a year. Upon taking the city, Rhaenyra insisted on claiming her fathers seat, and so she climbed the Iron Throne and accepted pleas of forgiveness and loyalty from those in the Red Keep all throughout the night. Although Rhaenyra was dressed in armor, Septon Eustace claimed that those present witnessed the throne leaving several cuts on her legs and left hand. The dripping blood was taken as a sign that the throne had rejected her; her days as ruler would be few.
While those living in King’s Landing had welcomed Rhaenyra’s return as a ruler, for they had always had little love for Aegon II Targaryen and his brother Aemond, the fact that the spikes of the gates started to be filled with more and more heads each day, and the taxes were increased, turned the inhabitants of King’s Landing against their Queen. The smallfolk slowly started to turn against her, and eventually named her „King Maegor with Teats.” This term would remain a common curse in King’s Landig for a hundred years thereafter.
After hearing of the Two Betrayers, Rhaenyra grew paranoid and declared the two remaining dragonseeds, Ser Addam Velaryon and the girl Nettles both traitors, a decision with disastrous conseqneunces. Rhaenyra’s Hand, Lord Corlys Velaryon, who had named Ser Addam his heir, alerted Ser Addam in time for the knight to flee upon the back of the dragon Seasmoke. This lead to the arrest of Lord Corlys, which caused the fleet of House Velaryon to abandon Rhaenyra’s cause.
In order to have Nettles arrested, Queen Rhaenyra had sent a letter to Lord Manfryd Mooton, commanding him to kill the girl. Lord Mooton refused, as Nettles was under the protection of guest right, and he feared Prince Daemon Targaryen would kill them if them followed Rhaenyra’s orders, believing that there was no winning option for himself: refusing to obey Rhaenyra’s order, would make him a traitor to the crown. Insisting that King Viserys I and Jaehaerys I would never have asked such a thing, Lord Manfryd then decided to change his allegiance to King Aegon II Targaryen, after both the girl Nettles and Prince Daemon had left his roof for the very last time.
After the Storming of the Dragonpit Rhaenyra fled King’s Landing. Terrorized and despairing, she grew grey and haggard as she traveled past Rosby, Stokeworth, and Duskendale. Once she reached Dragonstone, Rhaenyra was betrayed by Ser Alfred Broome, whose men slew the remainder of her Queensguard. Her half-brother Aegon II then had her fed to his own dragon, Sunfyre, at Dragonstone. King Aegon II decreed that Rhaenyra was never a queen and that she be referred to only as princess in all chronicles and court records. Rhaenyra’s three eldest sons all died fighting during the Dance of the Dragons, but her two youngest sons, the sons by her second husband, Prince Daemon, survived the civil war. The war ended when Aegon II died shortly after his victory in 131 AC with no male issue, and was succeeded by Rhaenyra’s and Daemon’s elder son, the boy Aegon III, who had seen his mother’s death by dragon. Rhaenyra’s second son with Prince Daemon would also later rule as King, after both of the sons of Aegon III died without any issue. Alicent Hightower : Alicent Hightower was a member of House Hightower who became the second wife to King Viserys I Targaryen. She was the daughter of Ser Otto Hightower, who had been Hand of the King to King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and later to King Viserys I. She was the mother of King Aegon II, Prince Aemond, Prince Daeron, and Queen Helaena.Alicent was described as clever and lovely at the age of 18. After having given birth four times, Alicent remained as slender and graceful as before the first pregnancy.
Story : Alicent arrived at the court of King Jaehaerys I when she was fifteen years old, in 101 AC, when her father, Ser Otto Hightower, was named Hand of the King. Alicent would become the constant companion of the Old King, whose health was failing. She would fetch his meals, help him wash and dress him, and read to him. In the end, King Jaehaerys would sometimes mistake her for his daughter, Saera Targaryen. King Jaehaerys eventually died in 103 AC, while Alicent was reading to him. There were many who tought that she was his mistress.
Alicent stayed at court, as her father continued to occupy the position as Hand of the King under Jaehaerys’ successor, King Viserys I Targaryen. Already early in the reign of Viserys, Ser Otto and Prince Daemon Targaryen were at odds with each other, and the court fool Mushroom has suggested that the quarrel between the two men began when Daemon deflowered Alicent. The truths of these tales has never been uncovered.
In the years that followed, Alicent caught the eye of King Viserys I, whose first wife, Queen Aemma Arryn, had died, and whose council was urging him to wed again. Ignoring all advice from his council, Viserys choose Alicent as his wife. They married in106 AC, despite the whispers of people who believed that the Hand had risen above himself. Some people even doubted Alicents virtue, as rumours began circling that she had given her maidenhead to Prince Daemon, and had later even slept with King Viserys while Queen Aemma was still alive. Nonetheless, Alicent was wed to the King.
Originally, Queen Alicent had a good relationship with her stepdaughter, Princess Rhaenyra. But when Alicent gave birth to a son, Prince Aegon, a daughter, Princess Helaena, and another son, Prince Aemond, in rapid succession, and Rhaenyra remained Viserys’ heir, those feelings started to change. Both women wanted to be the first lady of the realm, but there could only be one.
Alicent’s biggest supporter was her own father, Ser Otto Hightower. He eventually pushed too far on the matter, and was fired for it. Having no place at court anymore, Ser Otto returned to Hightower. A „Queen’s party”, a group of powerful lords who were friends with Queen Alicent, remained, who supported the rights of Alicent’s sons.
In 111 AC, a great tourney was held at King’s Landing on the fifth anniversary of the King’s marriage to Queen Alicent. At the opening feast, Alicent wore a green gown, whilst Princess Rhaenyra dressed in Targaryen red and black. Note was taken, and thereafter it became the custom to refer to “greens” and “blacks” when talking of the queen’s party and the party of the princess, respectively. In the tourney itself, the greens were defeated by the blacks, when Ser Criston Cole, wearing Princess Rhaenyra’s favor, unhorsed all of the queen’s champions, including two of her cousins and her youngest brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower.
Prince Daemon Targaryen was opposed to Alicent and her sons, and after his return to King’s Landing, he made fun of Alicent, Aegon and Aemond, and the other greens, to entertain Princess Rhaenyra. It is said he acted cool towards the princes Aegon and Aemond, because they had pushed him even lower in the line of succession.
When Princess Rhaenyra turned sixteen, the small council started looking for a suitable husband. Alicent had her own choice: her eldest son, Prince Aegon, who, while the Princess was sixteen years old, was only 6 years old himself. Viserys argued that the siblings never had gotten along, but Alicent urged her husband that was all the more reason to wed the two. Viserys refused, believing that Alicent only made the suggestion to get her own blood on the throne.
By the time Princess Rhaenyra got married, in 114 AC, Queen Alicent had found a new member for her greens: Ser Criston Cole, former companion to Princess Rhaenyra. Cole fought in the tourney for Rhaenyra’s wedding with Alicent’s favor, and was named Alicents personal protector soon thereafter.
By 115 AC, the enemity between the greens and the blacks had grown deep. Whilst Alicent had given birth to Prince Daeron, who, just like his brothers and sister, looked unmistakenly like a Targaryen, Princess Rhaenyra had given birth to princes Jacaerys and Lucerys, who both looked nothing like either Rhaenyra or her husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon. Whilst Alicent was convinced the children had actually been fathered by Ser Harwin Strong, King Viserys did not share these feelings.
In 120 AC, Alicent’s second son got involved in an incident where Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys took out Aemonds right eye. Alicent, angered, demanded that to Lucerys the same would be done. After this incident, King Viserys I declared that Alicent and her children would remain at court in King’s Landing, whilst Rhaenyra and her family remained atDragonstone. Later that year, as Rhaenyra gave birth to her first son by Prince Daemon Targaryen, Alicent grew wroth upon learning the child had been named Aegon, believing it to be a slight against her own firstborn, who had also been named Aegon.
When King Viserys I died in his sleep, on the third day of the third moon in 129 AC, a servant warned Queen Alicent as instructed, without telling anyone else. Alicent warned SerCriston Cole, now Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and together, they called the Small council, where plans were made to crown Alicent’s son Prince Aegon, instead of Princess Rhaenyra, who had been Viserys’ heir. At the coronation ceremony held for Aegon and Helaena, Aegon’s sister-wife, in the Dragonpit, Alicent placed her own crown upon the head of Helaena and addressed her as „my queen.”
After the coronation she moved her chambers to the Tower of the Hand, where her father resided. Every evening before bed, Queen Helaena would bring her children to see their grandmother. Because the Tower of the Hand was less secure than Maegor’s Holdfast, Blood and Cheese were able to take advantage of this custom. They stole into Alicent’s chambers, slew her bedmaid, and bound and gagged her. When Helaena arrived with the children, they slew Prince Jaehaerys, Aegon’s heir, as revenge for the death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys. Helaena subsequently went mad with grief.
When Rhaenyra took King’s Landing, Alicent was forced to yield. She was bound in golden fetters, but while her father and co-conspirators on the small council were beheaded for treason, Rhaenyra spared her life „for the sake of our father, who loved you once.” When Helaena’s madness led her to commit suicide by jumping from her window, Alicent cursed her rival.
Alicent outlived Rhaenyra, but her son lived only half a year after triumphing over his half-sister. Both of his brothers had already died in the war. Alicent’s remaining grandson, Prince Maelor, had died as well, leaving only her granddaughter Jaehaera, who married Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III.Alicent was imprisoned after the Dance of the Dragons, and remained a captive for the remainder of her life. She eventually died in 133 AC, during the outbreak of Winter Fever.
Character : Princess Daena Targaryen, also known as Daena the Defiant, was the eldest daughter of King Aegon III. She was the sister-wife of King Baelor I Targaryen, the lover of King Aegon IV, and mother to Daemon Blackfyre.
Daena was wild almost from birth. A Targaryen to the bone, she was strong, beautiful, and wilful and like the rest of her siblings had Valyrian looks. Her long silver-gold hair was thick and curly, an untamed mane that framed her heart-shaped face and her sparling purple eyes. To top it off, she had a a fearless „I’ll dare anything” smile. Daena was lithe and athletic. She was an expert horsewoman and also a hunter and a fine archer with her short recurved bow.
She worshipped her father and idolized her brother Daeron. Daena’s dress was often as dramatic as she was. As a child, she always wore black in emulation of her father. After her brother Baelor failed to consummate their marriage, she changed to all white, and vowed to wear nothing else until she had been properly bedded, in hopes of shaming him – this did not work. Baelor liked her in white, feeling that it made her look more innocent. Later, as a pampered prisoner in her brother’s court, Daena made several escapes, usually by dressing as a washerwoman or serving girl (once with the connivance of her cousin,Aegon).
She always wore the golden three-headed dragon pendant she had inherited from her father. At court she wore it on a fine golden chain; when in disguise, she hung it on a leather thong and hid it beneath her clothes. Supposedly she even wore it when bathing and when making love.
Story : Daena was the eldest daughter of Aegon III and Daenaera of House Velaryon, and was born around 145 AC. She had two brothers and two sisters. At a early age, Daena was married to her brother Baelor. Daena and Baelor’s marriage was an unhappy one, with her pious brother obsessed by the Faith of the Seven. Baelor refused to consummate their marriage and had it dissolved when he ascended the Iron Throne, after Daena’s elder brother King Daeron I died in Dorne.
After Baelor’s ascension, Daena and her sisters, Rhaena and Elaena, were confined to their own apartments in the Red Keep, which soon became known as the Maidenvault, so the sight of them would not tempt Baelor or others in his court to mortal lusts. Daena was sixteen at this time.
During her time of confinement at the Maidenvault, Daena escaped several times and had an affair with her cousin Prince Aegon, despite his marriage to his own sister-wifeNaerys. When she became pregnant she refused to name the father of the child and became known as „Daena the Defiant”. Her son was born robust and healthy, with the purple eyes and silver-gold hair of the Targaryens. Daena named the boy Daemon and raised him alone. The father was only revealed years later when King Aegon IV Targaryen gave Daemon the ancestral Targaryen sword Blackfyre, acknowledging him as one of his bastards, while also legitimizing him.
After Baelor’s death, there were some amongst the smallfolk — and even some lords — who felt that the Iron Throne should by rights now pass to Daena, as she was Aegon III’s eldest daughter. However, a decade of isolation in the Maidenvault had left Daena and her sisters without powerful allies, and memories of Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Dance of the Dragons had left many leery of the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne. Also, Daena the Defiant was seen by many as being wild, unmanageable, and wanton (as a year earlier she had given birth to her bastard son Daemon). The precedents of the Great Council of 101 and the Dance of the Dragons were therefore cited, the claims of Baelor’s sisters were set aside, and the crown passed to their uncle Viserys II.
Character : Princess Rhaena Targaryen was the second daughter of King Aegon III Targaryen and his second wife, Queen Daenaera Velaryon. The sister of both King Daeron I Targaryen and King Baelor I Targaryen, at the age of fourteen, Rhaena became known as one of the Maidens in the Tower when Baelor imprisoned her and her sisters. At fourteen, two years younger than Daena, Rhaena was just as lovely as her sister, but hers was a softer, sweeter, more feminine beauty. Though by no means plump, her body was more rounded than Daena’s. Her breasts were larger, her lips fuller, her hair more gold than silver and always carefully coiffed and combed. She had soft, kind eyes and a shy, sweet smile. Personality wise she differed quite alot from her older sister. Where Daena was wilful, wild, and adventurous, Rhaena was dutiful, meek, and passive. She loved lace and gold trim and often embroidered depictions of faith on her clothing. Story : Rhaena was the second daughter of King Aegon III Targaryen and Queen Daenaera of House Velaryon. She was born in 147 AC. She had two brothers, Daeron and Baelor, and two sisters, Daena and Elaena. Rhaena, along with her sisters, was one of the infamous sisters of King Baelor I Targaryen. By Baelor, she and her sisters were locked in what would since then be known as the Maidenvault, becoming known as the „Three Maids in the Tower”. Baelor imprisoned the sisters in comfortable confinement so the sight of them would not tempt him or others in his court to mortal lusts. Rhaena, unlike her two sisters, never chaffed at her confinement. She was heavily influenced by her brother Baelor and in later life even joined the Faith and became a Septa. The second daughter and fourth child of King Aegon III Targaryen, Rhaena was the granddaughter of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her uncle-husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen. Rhaena never married, due to joining the faith, and thus did not have any children herself.
Character : Princess Elaena Targaryen was the third daughter and youngest child of King Aegon III Targaryen and his wife, QueenDaenaera Velaryon.According to semi-canon sources, Elaena was not a great beauty like her sisters, and at age eleven was even described as a skinny little thing, though her beauty matured as she got older, and men said that she was more beautiful at age seventy than at age seventeen. Her eyes were a soft lilac, her mouth thin-lipped and often angry. Her hair was a platinum white with a bright golden streak down the middle, an unusual color even for the Targaryens. She wore it long, pulled back, and braided, and was always being told it was her crowning beauty. She did however cut it off, in retaliation against her brother Baelor, for imprisoning her in the Maidenvault. Afterwards she wore her hair in short for years. While appearance-wise she differed much from her sisters, character-wise, she had more than a little of her sister Daena’s wilfullness, as she would prove when she grew older. She liked to dress in black as a child, simply because Daena also dressed in black.
Story : Elaena was the third daughter and youngest child of King Aegon III Targaryen and Queen Daenaera of House Velaryon, and was born in 150 AC. She had two older brothers, Daeron and Baelor, and two older sisters, Daena and Rhaena. Elaena’s most cherished possession was a dragon’s egg whose stony shell showed the same colors as her hair.
Elaena and her sisters were the infamous sisters of King Baelor I who were housed in the Maidenvault. The three sisters were known aftwerwards as the „Three Maids in the Tower”. Baelor imprisoned them in comfortable confinement so the sight of them would not tempt him or others in his court to mortal lusts.Elaena was locked away at age of eleven. Overall, she married three times in her life, twice at a king’s behest and once for passion, and gave birth to seven children in total. She then declared that if seven was sufficient for the Gods, it would do for her as well.
Although she had three husbands during her lifetime, the great love of her life was her cousin, Alyn Velaryon, She wished to marry him, but he disappeared at sea. A year after his disappearance, she agreeed to marry elsewhere. Elaena had birthed Alyn two bastard children, the twins Jon and Jeyne Waters.
She married her first husband, the wealthy but elderly Lord Ossifer Plumm, in 176 AC. He died on their wedding night (supposedly after seeing her naked), but Elaena had become pregnant and gave birth to a son called Viserys Plumm. There were those who were dubious of the boy’s parentage, and had suspicions on who might actually be the boy’s father. None dared speak their suspicions aloud however.
Elaena married her second husband, Ronnel Penrose, in the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen. He sat on the king’s small council as Master of Coin, though it was widely known that she was the one performing the duties, as she was very shrewd and intelligent with money while Ronnel, while being a good man, was one without a great facility for numbers. King Daeron trusted her with many important matters of state and she grew influential. Elaena birthed Ronnel four children: Robin, Laena, Jocelyn, and Joy Penrose.
After Ronnel’s death Elaena married once more. This marriage was for love and by her own choosing. With King Daeron II’s blessing, Elaena was married to Ser Michael Manwoody, not long after Ronnel’s death. Manwoody had come to court earlier, to attend the court of Queen Mariah Martell. Manwoody was send as an envoy to Braavos on several occasions, and there is record of correspondence between him and the key holders of the Iron Bank. These letters, while signed with Manwoody’s name, and fixed with his own seal, appear to have been in the handwriting of Princess Elaena. Elaena said it wasn’t Michael’s intelligence or wit that had caused her to fall in love with him, but his love of music. When Manwoody died, Elaena therefor commanded his effigy to be carved with him holding a harp, instead of a sword and spurs of knighthood.
Character : Lady Larra Rogare of Lys was the wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, brother of King Aegon III Targaryen. She abandoned Viserys before his ascendance to the Iron Throne, thus she never actually became Queen Consort.Tall and willowy, with the silver-gold hair and purple eyes of Old Valyria, she was considered a great beauty.
Story : Lady Larra was a Lyseni noblewoman born to the wealthy and influential Rogare banking family from the Free City of Lys. She was the daughter of Lysandro Rogare, known as „Lysandro the Magnificent”. He was the head of the wealthy and influential Rogare family, whose power and wealth even waxed that of the Iron Bank of Braavos during its prime.
Larra had wed Prince Viserys Targaryen in 134 AC, at the age of nineteen. Not too long thereafter, Lord Alyn Velaryon found Prince Viserys in Lys, and paid for the Prince’s release. Viserys was taken back to Westeros, and Larra went with him. In King’s Landing in 135 AC, she gave birth to the first of her three children with Viserys: PrinceAegon.
Larra’s brothers had accompanied her to King’s Landing, but there were those at court who mistrusted the Rogares. Larra’s brothers were arrested, and Lord Thaddeus Rowan, Hand of the King, was arrested and tortured for information, having been suspected to have been working together with the Rogares. Ser Marston Waters, who was then named Hand of the King, ordered the arrest of Lady Larra herself, but King Aegon III Targaryen and Prince Viserys refused to give her up. They were besieged in Maegor’s Holdfast for eighteen days, before Waters decided to fullfill his king’s commands and arrest those who had implicated Lord Rowan and the Rogares falsely.
In 136 AC, Larra gave birth to a second son, Prince Aemon. A daughter, Princess Naerys, would follow in 138 AC.Lady Larra had never truly felt part of the court in Westeros, and was never truly happy. A year after having given birth to Naerys, in 139 AC, Larra returned to Lys. She eventually died in 145 AC. Her cause of death is unknown.
Prince Viserys, an otherwise charming man, grew stern after Larra had left him and their children.
Character : Queen Naerys Targaryen was the sister-wife to King Aegon IV, known as the Unworthy, the sister of Prince Aemon „the Dragonknight”, and the mother of King Daeron II Targaryen and Princess Daenerys Targaryen.Naerys had the Targaryen looks, a very fine and delicate beauty, almost unworldy. She was very slender and small, with big purple eyes and fine, pale, porcelain skin, near translucent. Naerys dressed well, but simply, and seldom wore her crown or any other jewellery. Though she had the silver-gold hair of the Targaryens, she often bound it up beneath a hair net or concealed it beneath a cowl. She bore a certain resemblance to Daenerys Targaryen.
Story : Naerys was the only daughter and youngest child of King Viserys II Targaryen and Larra Rogare.According to semi-canon sources, she almost died in the cradle and was sickly for most of her life, finding most physical activity to be very taxing. She ate but little and was painfully thin, almost emaciated.
She loved music and poetry, played the harp very well and enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She was also devout in her faith, and often found solace in the pages of the Seven-Pointed Star. She would have become a septa, had her fatherallowed it.
Naerys loved Aemon the most out of her two brothers, as he knew how to make her laugh. Aemon was also more like Naerys in character, while Aegon was not. Yet, in 153 AC, Naerys was married to Aegon at their father’s orders. The singers like to claim that both Aemon and Naerys wept during the ceremony, but the truth is different: Aemon is known to have quarreled with Aegon during the feast, and Naerys wept during the bedding, not the actual wedding.Prince Aemon joined the Kingsguardsoon after the wedding, at the age of 17.
On the last day of 153 AC, Naerys gave birth for the first time, to a son named Daeron. Daeron’s birth was difficult for Naerys, however, and Grand Maester Alford warned her that another pregnancy could kill her.Naerys thus went to her husband, and asked him, as he now had an heir, if they could live as brother and sister, instead of husband and wife. Aegon refused.
The marriage of Aegon and Naerys was an unhappy one. Aegon is known to have stated that he had loved nine women in his entire lifetime, yet Naerys wasn’t counted as being amongst those. Whilst unhappy in her marriage, Naerys still had her brother Aemon, and her son Daeron, who both knew how to make her smile.
Throughout the years, Naerys would go through several more difficult pregnancies, despite Grand Maester Alford’s warnings from 153 AC, that another pregnancy could kill her. In 161 AC, Naerys gave birth to twins, and nearly died in the process. The twins died shortly after birth, leading King Baelor I to fast for a moon’s turn.Baelor also sent Naerys’ husband, Prince Aegon, to Braavos on a diplomatic mission after this pregnancy. Accounts at the time suggest it was an excuse to make sure Aegon left Naerys alone as she recovered from the difficult childbirth. In 172 AC, Naerys gave birth to a second set of twins. The boy was stillborn, but the girl, Princess Daenerys, survived. Yet again, this delivery caused Naerys to linger near death, and Aegon’s Hand, Lord Bracken, went as far as to speak openly about marrying his own daughter Barba (who had given birth to the king’s child a fortnight before Naerys had gone into labour) to Aegon, after Naerys’ expected eventual death. However, Naerys eventually slowly recovered, and the scandal caused Lord Bracken to be fired from his office.
Naerys did, in the end, die in childbirth, a year after Prince Aemon’s death. The child, never mentioned again, most likely died as well.
After Naerys’s husband became King, rumours that their son Daeron had not been fathered by Aegon, but by their brother, Prince Aemon started being spread around. The truth of this claim has never been proven or disproven, though the singers claim Naerys loved Aemon, and Aemon loved her. Aemon championed her and defended her honor against the slanders of Ser Morgil Hastwyck, when he accused her of treason.
The writings of Maester Kaeth in the Lives of Four Kings state that it was King Aegon IV himself who secretly started the rumors of Naerys’ adultery, using Ser Morgil to spread this tale (though, at the time, the king denied this). It should be noted that these accusations only started when King Aegon and his heir Prince Daeron quarreled in 174 AC, when Daeron opposed Aegon’s plan for an unprovoked war on Dorne.
Prince Aemon also once won a tourney as a mystery knight so he could name Naerys the queen of love and beauty, instead of said title going to one of Aegon’s mistresses.
Aemon eventually died defending Aegon from two men from House Toyne who attempted to murder him to avenge their brother. Naerys did not long survive Aemon’s death, as she died in childbirth a year later. King Aegon, who had already slighted both Naerys and Aemon at every previous chance he’d had in the past, did little to honor either of his siblings’ memories. Daring to go further now that the Dragonknight was dead, Aegon also began to make more references to Daeron’s alleged parentage.
As far as is known, there are only rumours about Daeron’s parentage, with no one having ever questioned the paternity of Daenerys, the only other child of Naerys who lived past infancy.
Falena Stokeworth : Falena Stokeworth was a member of House Stokeworth during the reign of Aegon III Targaryen.
Story : Lady Falena was the first mistress of Aegon IV Targaryen. She „made him a man” in 149 AC when he was fourteen, she being ten years his elder. When a knight of the Kingsguard found them in bed together in 151 AC, his father, Prince Viserys, wed Falena to his master-at-arms, Lucas Lothston, and persuaded King Aegon III Targaryen to name Lucas Lord of Harrenhal in order to remove Falena from court. However, over the next two years, Aegon paid frequent visits to Harrenhal.
Falena returned to court at King’s Landing when King Aegon IV named her husband Hand of the King, bringing her daughterJeyne Lothston with her. It was rumoured the king enjoyed both mother and daughter together. While Aegon did not acknowledge any of Falena’s offspring as his own, it is rumored that at least one of Falena’s children, daughter Jeyne Lothston (Aegon’s eight mistress), was Aegon’s daughter. Jeyne Lothston : Jeyne Lothston was a member of House Lothston and was the daughter of Lord Lucas Lothston and Lady Falena Stokeworth. She was King Aegon IV Targaryen’s eighth mistress, and rumoured to have been possibly fathered by the king himself. Story : Jeyne was brought to court by her mother, Falena Stokeworth, in 178 AC, when she was fourteen. King Aegon IV Targaryenmade Lord Lucas Lothston his new Hand, and it was said (but never proved) that he enjoyed mother and daughter together in the same bed. Aegon soon gave Jeyne a pox he had caught from the whores he had seen after Lady Bethany Bracken’s execution, and the Lothstons were then all sent from court.
Character : Megette, also known as Merry Meg, was the young and buxom wife of a blacksmith. She was the second of Aegon IV Targaryen’s mistresses.
Story : While riding near Fairmarket in 155 AC Aegon’s horse threw a shoe, and when he sought out the local smith, he came to notice the man’s young wife. He went on to buy her for seven gold dragons (and the threat of Ser Joffrey Staunton of theKingsguard). Megette was installed in a house in King’s Landing; she and Aegon were even “wed” in a secret ceremony conducted by a mummer playing a septon. Prince Viserys put an end to it, returning Megette to her husband and placing their daughters with the Faith to be trained as septas. Megette was beaten to death within a year by the blacksmith.Megette gave Aegon four children in as many years; Alysanne, Lily, Willow and Rosey
Character : Cassella Vaith was a member of House Vaith and a Lady of Vaith. She was the third mistress of Aegon IV Targaryen, although prior to his sitting the Iron Throne.Cassella was a willowy maid with green eyes and pale whiteblond hair.
Story : After the Submission of Sunspear during the Conquest of Dorne, Cassella was one of the hostages sent to King’s Landing, as she was the daughter of Lord Vaith. She was escorted by Prince Aegon, who kept Cassella a „hostage” in his own chambers.
After the Dornishmen revolted and killed King Daeron I Targaryen, all the hostages were to be killed. Aegon, by then bored of her, returned Cassella to her place with the other prisoners. The new king, Baelor I Targaryen, pardoned all the hostages and personally took them back to Dorne.
Cassella never wed or had children, and in her old age she was consumed by the delusion that she had been Aegon’s one true love and that he would soon send for her. Once at Vaith, Dunk met the aged Lady Vaith and spoke to her with such lack of grace as to put his own life and Egg’s in danger. According to Egg, however, Lady Vaith was mad, so it is unclear if that danger could have been avoided.
Character : Bellegere Otherys, also known as the Black Pearl of Braavos, was a smuggler, trader, sometime pirate, and the captain of the Widow Wind. She was born of a union between a Braavosi merchant’s daughter and an envoy from the Summer Isles. She was „as black as a pot of ink”.
Story : After Queen Naerys Targaryen almost died in 161 AC after giving birth, King Baelor I Targaryen sent Prince Aegon, her husband, to Braavos on a diplomatic mission. There he met Bellegere. His affair with the Black Pearl continued for ten years, though it was said that Bellegere had a husband in every port and that Aegon was one of many.Bellegere gave birth to three children during the decade, two girls and a boy of doubtful paternity: Bellanora Otherys, Narha Otherys and Balerion Otherys.
Barba Bracken : Barba Bracken was a member of House Bracken. She was a companion of the princesses in the Maidenvault and becameAegon IV Targaryen’s fifth mistress.Barba was buxom and had dark hair. The Blackwoods claim she was not as beautiful as Melissa Blackwood.
Story : On the death of King Baelor I Targaryen and the ascension of King Viserys II Targaryen in 171 AC, the princesses and their companions were once again allowed male companionship. Aegon became entranced with sixteen-year-old Barba.
On his own ascent in 172 AC, Aegon named her father, Lord Bracken, as his Hand and openly took Barba for his mistress. She bore him a bastard only a fortnight before Queen Naerys delivered twins, a stillborn boy and a girl Daenerys. With the queen lingering near death, the Hand talked openly of wedding his daughter to the king. After the queen’s recovery, the scandal proved Barba’s undoing, as young Prince Daeron and his uncle, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, forced Aegon to send her and the bastard away.
One day, when Aegon was visiting Stone Hedge, he went out hunting, and saw the hills known as the Mother’s Teats. Aegon named them Barba’s Teats for his mistress. While Barba was buxom, Melissa Blackwood was slender in shape. Barba, after Melissa had replaced her, was once heard to have said that Melissa was as flat as a boy. When word got back to King Aegon, he renamed the hills from Barba’s Teats to Missy’s Teats to honor his newer mistress.Barba’s younger sister, Bethany Bracken also became one of King Aegon IV mistresses. Barba bore the king one bastard:Aegor „Bittersteel” Rivers.
Bethany Bracken : Bethany Bracken was a member of House Bracken. She became King Aegon IV Targaryen’s seventh mistress.
Story : Bethany was groomed by her father, Lord Bracken, and older sister, Barba Bracken expressly to win the king’s favor and displace Missy Blackwood. In 177 AC, Bethany caught Aegon’s eye as he visited at Stone Hedge to see his bastard son,Aegor. By then, the king was fat and foul-tempered, but Bethany delighted him, and he took her back with him to King’s Landing. Bethany found his royal embraces distressing and for comfort, she turned to a knight of the Kingsguard, SerTerrence Toyne. The pair was discovered abed by Aegon himself in 178 AC. Terrence was tortured to death and both Bethany and her father were executed.
Charcater : Lady Melissa Blackwood, nicknamed Missy, was a member of House Blackwood during the reign of Aegon IV Targaryen. She was the sixth of Aegon’s nine mistress and the best loved of them.
Story : Both younger and prettier than Lady Barba Bracken (albeit far less buxom), as well as more modest, Missy had a kind heart and generous nature that led Queen Naerys Targaryen, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, and Prince Daeron to befriend her.
While Barba was buxom, Melissa had a slender frame. When Barba joked that Melissa was flat as a board, Aegon had theTeats renamed from Barba’s Teats to Missy’s Teats to honor his new mistress. Lord Bracken and Barba groomed Bethany Bracken to replace Missy, which occurred when Aegon visited his bastard son Aegor Rivers at Stone Hedge and met Bethany in 177 AC.Because Lady Melissa was well loved, however, her son Brynden Rivers was able to maintain close relations at court even after his mother’s dismissal.During the five years of her „reign,” Missy bore the king three bastards, Mya Rivers, Gwenys Rivers and Brynden „Bloodraven” Rivers.
Character : Lady Serenei of Lys, also called Sweet Serenei, was the ninth and last mistress of Aegon IV Targaryen. There was one child of their union, Shiera Seastar – the last of the king’s Great Bastards.Serenei was considered by many to be the most lovely of Aegon’s mistresses.Lady Serenei was the last daughter from an ancient but impoverished Valyrian noble family. She was cold and haughty towards others at court. Rumors spread that that she was much older than the king, practicing dark arts to retain her youth and beauty.
Story : Serenei was brought to court by Lord Jon Hightower, the new Hand of the King. She died giving birth to the last of the king’s bastard children, a girl called Shiera Seastar.
Character : Bellenora Otherys was the eldest of the three bastard children of King Aegon IV Targaryen and his fourth mistress, Bellegere Otherys.
Story : After Princess Naerys Targaryen had almost died, giving birth in 161 AC, her husband, Prince Aegon was send to Braavos as an envoy, so Naerys would have sufficient time to recover. In Braavos, Aegon met Bellegere Otherys, with whom he started an aggair. Aegon and Bellegere had an affair for ten years, during which Bellegere gave birth to three children: Bellanora, Narha and Balerion. Their paternity remains doubtful, as Bellegere is said to have had a husband in every port she visited.
Bellenora became a courtesan and took the name of „Black Pearl of Braavos”, acclaimed by singers of her day as the most beautiful woman in all the world. The tradition was continued by her daughter.
Character : Shiera Seastar was the last of the Great Bastards of King Aegon IV Targaryen, born to his last mistress, Serenei of Lys. She was famous for her beauty, and was also the known lover of Brynden Rivers.
Shiera was renowned as a beauty and seductress, with long Targaryen silver-gold hair, and a heart-shaped face. Although she had two mismatched eyes—one blue, the other green—it was said that the „defect” only enhanced her beauty. She was fond of ivory and lace and cloth-of-silver, but not gold, which she considered too vulgar.
She was a great reader, even at an early age, spoke many languages, and maintained a large and arcane library. She also was reputed to share her mother Serenei’s skill in the dark arts. She was known to possess a famous heavy silver necklace, alternating star sapphires and emeralds to compliment her unusual eyes.
Story : Aegon IV sired Shiera upon the ninth and last of his mistresses, Lady Serenei of Lys, the last daughter of an ancient but impoverished line of Valyrian nobility. Shiera’s mother was disliked by Aegon’s courtiers and considered cold and haughty; it was rumored that she was much older than the king, practicing dark arts to retain her youth and beauty. Serenei was nevertheless considered by many the most lovely of Aegon’s mistresses. She died in childbed bringing forth Shiera, the child’s name meaning „Star of the Sea.”
Shiera never married, but took many lovers, and numerous duels were fought for her favor. Her half-brother Brynden Rivers, known as Bloodraven, was her most ardent suitor, and repeatedly proposed marriage to her. Although she refused to marry him, she did share her bed with him. Her other half-brother Aegor Rivers, known as Bittersteel, was said to have also desired her, which only served to increase the hatred between Bloodraven and Bittersteel.
Her relationship with Bloodraven was widely known, and there were rumors that she bathed in the blood of maidens to retain her beauty. Though she never wed, she had many offers, and several lovers through the years. Duels were fought over the right to sit beside her, men killed themselves after falling from her favor, poets outdid each other writing songs about her beauty. Her most ardent admirer was her half-brother, Bloodraven, who proposed marriage to her half a hundred times. Shiera gave him her bed, but never her hand. It amused her more to make him jealous.
Story : Ollena Tyrell was born in the house Redwyne. In her youth, she was arranged to marry Daeron Targaryen, but Olenna (so she claims) did everything she could to make sure it never came to fruition. Although according to history it was Daeron who actually broke the betrothal, she speaks contemptuously of the Targaryen family history of madness. Olenna liked her husband Luthor well enough, as he was kind and not unskilled in bed, but she still considered him an oaf.
Character : Lady Joanna Lannister was a Lady of Casterly Rock, the wife of Lord Tywin Lannister, and the mother of Cersei, Jaime andTyrion. She died giving birth to Tyrion years before the beginning of the series.
Story : Joanna was born into a branch of House Lannister. Her father Jason was the younger brother of Lord Tytos Lannister. She had one older sibling, Damon, a son from her father’s first marriage, and five younger siblings (three brothers, two sisters), the eldest of which was Stafford. She also had an older bastard sister, Lynora.
Joanna went to King’s Landing in 259 AC, for the coronation of King Jaehaerys II Targaryen, and would remain as a lady-in-waiting for the future queen, Princess Rhaella Targaryen. There are rumours that Joanna had given her maidenhead to Prince Aerys the night of Jaehaerys’ coronation, and briefly became Aerys’ paramour after he ascended the throne himself. However, Grand Maester Pycelle insists these tales are baseless, as Tywin would not have married Joanna if they were true, „for he was ever a proud man and not one accustomed to feasting on another man’s leavings.”
Joanna married her first cousin, Tywin, in 263 AC in a lavish ceremony in the Great Sept of Baelor. On their wedding day, Tywin smiled, a very rare occurrence. However at the wedding feast, Aerys drunkenly japed about how it was a pity the first night tradition was banned, and he took certain „unwonted liberties” with Joanna in the bedding ritual when the men at the feast had to disrobe the bride.
Not long thereafter, Joanna was dismissed by Queen Rhaella from her service in King’s Landing. While Queen Rhaella turned a blind eye towards most of her husband’s infidelities, she did not approve when it concerned one of her own „ladies.” (Joanna was one of many ladies to be sent away from court.) She departed for Casterly Rock at once, and seldom visited King’s Landing afterwards.
Joanna’s marriage to Tywin was reportedly a happy one. Joanna became Tywin’s trusted counselor and companion. Her influence on her husband was such that people would say that Tywin ruled the Seven Kingdoms as Hand of the King, „but was ruled at home by his lady wife.”In 266 AC, Joanna gave birth to Cersei and Jaime, with Tywin present. King Aerys ordered Tywin to bring Joanna and the children to King’s Landing when the children were old enough to travel, but Lord Tytos Lannister died before this could occur. Instead, Tywin, Aerys, Prince Rhaegar, and half the court went to the Westerlands in 267 AC, where they would remain for most of next year.
Joanna did attend the anniversary tourney in King’s Landing in 272 AC, held to celebrate King Aerys’ tenth year on the throne. There, King Aerys insulted Joanna, by asking her if nursing her children had ruined her breasts. Tywin, who was also present, was angered, and tried to resign as Hand of the King the next day, but King Aerys refused.
At some point within the next year, Joanna’s servant caught Jaime and Cersei together, engaged in some kind of sexual activity. Joanna sent the maid away, moved Jaime’s chamber to the other side of the castle, and put a guard outside of Cersei’s chamber. She then warned her twins that they must never do such a thing again, or else she would be forced to tell their father. But it was not long thereafter, in 273 AC, that Joanna died giving birth to Tyrion.
During her time as Queen Rhaella’s lady-in-waiting, Joanna had befriended the Princess of Dorne, another member of the court. The Dornish Princess had two children, Oberyn and Elia Martell, who were not yet promised in marriage, so the two women planned to have their children be wed to each other. Unfortunately, Joanna died birthing her youngest son while the Martells were on their way to Casterly Rock. Once confronted on the subject, Lord Tywin bluntly refused all the offers (Jaime wed to Elia, Cersei wed to Oberyn, or both), and instead offered newborn Tyrion for Princess Elia, an offer meant to be insulting.
Tywin seldom spoke of his wife but was much saddened by her death. He never remarried. According to his brother, Gerion Lannister, „the best part of Tywin died with her.”Another brother, Kevan, later took over Joanna’s role as Tywin’s most trusted counselor.
When Aerys’s daughter Daenerys asks Ser Barristan Selmy about her father and whether there was a woman he loved better than his queen, Ser Barristan replies,“Not loved. Mayhaps wanted is a better word, but…it was only kitchen gossip, the whispers of washerwomen and stableboys…”According to Barristan, King Aerys II lusted for Joanna Lannister, something that caused friction between the King and his Hand. Ser Barristan, choosing his words with care, goes on to tell Dany of her father’s behaviour during the wedding feast of Tywin and Joanna and during the bedding.
During the Siege of Riverrun, Jaime dreams and sees a woman he barely recognizes. At first, he believes her to be Cersei, but then realizes it is his mother. She asks if he will forget his father like he has forgotten her. She talks about the future that Tywin had wanted for his children: his son a knight and his daughter a queen. She cries when Jaime replies that they have indeed become that.
Character : Ashara Dayne was a noblewoman of House Dayne, the sister of the famous knight Ser Arthur Dayne. She committed suicide shortly after the end of Robert’s Rebellion.Ashara was tall, with long dark hair and haunting violet eyes. She had a reputation for great beauty. Many men were infatuated with her, including Barristan Selmy and, according to rumor, Eddard Stark.
Story : Ashara was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Elia Martell. She was present at the Tourney at Harrenhal, where she danced with several men, including Eddard Stark after his brother Brandon spoke with her.
After the events of the Tower of Joy, Ned Stark went to Starfall to inform House Dayne of Ser Arthur’s death and return to them his greatsword, Dawn. Ashara jumped from the top of one of the towers of Starfall, called the Palestone Sword, on the cliff atop the sea. Her body was never recovered. After these events, Ned Stark returned to Winterfell with the infant Jon Snow, whom he claimed as his bastard son, refusing to name the child’s mother. This sparked rumors that Ashara had been the mother of Stark’s bastard, and that grief at learning that her lover had been responsible for her brother’s death was the cause of her suicide.
Ser Barristan Selmy believes that Ashara gave birth to a stillborn daughter. According to Selmy, a man dishonored her atHarrenhal during the tourney. Selmy’s account is ambiguous. In his account, it was grief over the death of her child, and perhaps grief at the loss of the man who „dishonored” her or shame of the „dishonoring” that led to Ashara’s suicide. Selmy also wonders whether Ashara would have looked to him, instead of „Stark”, if she had known of his feelings for her. He said that of all his failures, none haunted him so much as that.
Character : Lyanna Stark was the younger sister of Lord Eddard Stark and was betrothed to Ned’s childhood friend, Robert Baratheon. Her abduction by Rhaegar Targaryen was the event that ultimately triggered Robert’s Rebellion and led to the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty.
Lyanna is described by all as beautiful. Her brother Eddard Stark refers to her, like their older brother Brandon, as „wolf-blooded” – headstrong, willful, courageous and hot-tempered. He goes on to compare her to his tomboyish daughter Arya in both appearance and personality, adding that Lyanna probably would have carried a sword if their father had allowed it.She is noted to have been a skilled rider. Lyanna loved the scent of winter roses.
Lyanna rode horses like a northman. Harwin compares her riding skills to those of Arya Stark, who he claims rides „like a northman”. Barbrey Dustin reports that both Brandon and Lyanna loved to ride. She compares them to a „pair of centaurs”.Roose Bolton claims that Lyanna was „half a horse herself”, however, he also claims that his son, Domeric Bolton, could out-race her.
Robert was deeply infatuated with Lyanna and remains very much in love with her memory over a decade after her death, to the point of causing major strain in his marriage to Cersei Lannister. Ned, however, points out that Robert never really knew Lyanna very well, that he didn´t know „the iron underneath”. While Robert believes Lyanna would never have publicly opposed him the way Cersei does, Ned says that Robert saw only Lyanna’s beauty, and never recognized her boldness and strength of will. Lyanna may have been considerably less enthusiastic about the marriage than Robert was, as she commented to Ned that Robert’s love for her would not prevent him from being unfaithful after their marriage.
Arya Stark resembles Lyanna in appearance, according to Eddard Stark. Margaery Tyrell is also said by some to resemble Lyanna, though Eddard Stark himself disagrees. Kevan Lannister recalls Lyanna having a „wild beauty” about her, though he believes that her looks paled in comparison to a young Cersei Lannister: „however bright a torch might burn it could never match the rising sun.”
Story : When Bran Stark has visions through the heart tree of Winterfell, a scene seems to involve a girl looking like Arya. Two children are seen duelling with broken branches, using them as swords. The girl is older and taller than the boy. She defeats the boy, slashing him across the thigh. The boy loses his balance and falls into the pool. He starts splashing and shouting. The girl warns him to be quiet, or Old Nan will hear him and notify their father. She then kneels and pulls her younger brother from the pool. The scene shifts to another vision before Bran has a chance to see more of the two children.
Lyanna was at Winterfell when her father promised her hand to Robert Baratheon. That same night she confided to Eddard concerning her opinion of Robert: that the man will never keep to one bed. She had heard that Robert had an illegitimate daughter in the Vale of Arryn, apparently Mya Stone. Eddard attempted to persuade her that what Robert did before the betrothal was insignificant and that Robert would change. She was not convinced.
Lyanna was present at the tourney at Harrenhal. There she found Howland Reed being bullied by three young squires, none older than fifteen-years-old. She roared „That’s my father’s man you’re kicking” and attacked them with a tourney sword. The bullies scattered and Lyanna „the she-wolf” took the injured man back to her „lair,” probably a tent. She cleaned his wounds and bound them with linen. Then she introduced the guest to her brothers Brandon Stark („the wild wolf”),Eddard Stark („the quiet wolf”), and Benjen Stark („the pup”).
That evening, Lyanna persuaded Reed to attend the feast marking the start of the tournament. She insisted that he was highborn and had as much right to attend as anyone. The „wolf maid” was not easy to refuse. Benjen found a suitable garb for Reed. Within Harrenhal, Reed ate and drank with the Starks. During the feast Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, a noted musician, performed a sad and beautiful song that made Lyanna weep; when Benjen teased her for crying, she poured wine over his head.
During the feast, Lyanna recognized the three bullying squires. One serving a pitchfork knight (House Haigh), one serving a porcupine (House Blount), and the last boy serving a knight of two towers (House Frey). She pointed them out to her brothers. Benjen volunteered to find armor for Reed, in case the crannogman wished to challenge them. Reed slept in the tent of Eddard that night. During the first two days of the tournament, the porcupine knight, pitchfork knight, and the knight of the two towers each won a place among the champions. But then the Knight of the Laughing Tree challenged and defeated all three of them, winning custody over their horses and armor. When the defeated trio sought to ransom back their former property, the Knight declared his terms: that they ought to teach their squires honor. The trio proceeded to chastise their squires sharply.
The Knight attracted unwanted attention. Robert Baratheon and Richard Lonmouth were determined to unmask him, whileAerys II Targaryen was certain that the man was his enemy. By the next morning, the Knight disappeared. An angry Aerys sent Rhaegar to search for the vanished Knight, but only the shield of the Knight could be found. Rhaegar went on to win the tournament and shocked all present by passing over his wife to crown Lyanna, then already betrothed to Robert Baratheon, as queen of love and beauty. According to the recollections of Eddard Stark, that day Rhaegar managed to unseat Brandon Stark, Yohn Royce, Arthur Dayne, and Barristan Selmy. Robert Baratheon was among the spectators, jesting with Jon Arryn and Eon Hunter. Then the victorious Rhaegar urged his horse past Elia Martell, laying the blue winter rose laurel of the queen of beauty in Lyanna’s lap. At that moment „all the smiles died”. Selmy blames himself for failing to defeat Rhaegar that day, for then he would have had a chance to crown his own lady love: Ashara Dayne. At some time after the tournament, Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar with the help of Arthur Dayne and Oswell Whent. The story (as told by Robert Baratheon) goes that Rhaegar carried her off and raped her. Barristan Selmy is convinced that „Prince Rhaegar loved his Lady Lyanna,” though that love sent thousands to their respective deaths.According to Viserys Targaryen, Rhaegar was simply not happy with his marriage. If Rhaegar was happy with Elia, he would not have needed Lyanna. He once blamed their sister Daenerys Targaryen for being born too late to marry Rhaegar. A happily married Rhaegar would need neither Elia nor Lyanna. Daenerys countered that, by the same logic, it was the fault of Viserys that he was not a girl, because then he would be the sister destined for Rhaegar. Viserys beat her cruelly for her insolence. Cersei Lannister, who was infatuated with Rhaegar, believes that the madness led King Aerys to deny Lord Tywin’s proposal of marriage between her and the crown prince; Cersei thinks that if she herself had only married Rhaegar as the gods had intended, he would have been satisfied in his queen and never have looked twice at the „wolf girl”.
Her eldest brother Brandon Stark was on his way to Riverrun when the news of his sister’s disappearance reached him, and instead he went straight to King’s Landing. Entering the Red Keep with a few companions (Ethan Glover, Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce and Elbert Arryn), he roared for Rhaegar „to come out and die.” But Rhaegar wasn’t there. King Aerys had Brandon and his companions arrested, accusing them of plotting murder and charged them with treason. Aerys summoned their fathers to court, supposedly to answer the charge against their sons. When they presented themselves, Aerys decided to kill them all, fathers and sons together, save only Ethan Glover. Brandon and Lyanna’s father, Lord Rickard Stark, demanded a trial by combat, and the king granted him the request. Lord Stark was allowed to armor himself for battle but was then suspended from the rafters over a blazing fire, Aerys choosing „fire” as his champion. He had Brandon watch as Rickard slowly roasted, the young son attached to a device which tightened a cord around his neck whenever he moved. Trying to reach for his longsword and rescue his father, Brandon strangled himself. They died with no real trial. This was a primary impetus for Robert’s Rebellion. Aerys next demanded the heads of Robert and Eddard. They were both wards of Jon Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie having pledged to protect them. Arryn responded to Aerys by raising his banners in revolt.
During the war, Lyanna’s fiancé Robert and brother Eddard were important leaders, together with Jon Arryn, who had been their foster father. Rhaegar spent much of the war at the Tower of Joy with Lyanna. He left to join the war effort when Aerys sent Gerold Hightower to find him. Rhaegar left Gerold with Arthur and Oswell to guard Lyanna. The decisive battle of the war came at the Trident, where Robert slew Rhaegar in single combat and the rebels defeated the royal army. According to the stories of Viserys Targaryen, Rhaegar had fought and died for „the woman he loved.”Daenerys Targaryen believes in that version of the story. One of the visions Daenerys sees in the House of the Undying, seems to depict the last moments of Rhaegar. Rubies are flying from his chest like drops of blood. Then his knees sink into the water. He whispers Lyanna’s name with his last breath.
Following the Battle of the Trident, the remnants of Rhaegar’s army retreated toward King’s Landing. Robert was wounded and unable to pursue them, but he entrusted Eddard with the pursuit. Eddard expected to find the city gates closed, with Aerys II and several thousand Targaryen loyalists leading the defense. He reached the city just after the Sack of King’s Landing by the forces of House Lannister. For most of the rebellion, the Lannisters had remained neutral, ignoring calls to arms by both the rebels and the loyalists. Then Tywin Lannister and 12,000 of his soldiers reached the capital. Aerys opened the gates to them, mistaking them for allied reinforcements. Instead they were there to sack the city and join the rebels. Pycelle had managed to convince Aerys II to open the gates. The king did so, unaware that Pycelle himself was only loyal to Tywin. Aerys ignored the warnings of Varys to not trust Lord Tywin.
Aerys II had one last plan: the wildfire plot, a way to burn the capital, leaving for Robert only ashes, charred bones, and cooked meat. He commanded Rossart, the Hand of the King, to activate the plan, making certain to take the Lannister forces with him to his funeral pyre. Meanwhile, he gave Jaime Lannister orders to decapitate Tywin and bring the head to him. Jaime instead killed Rossart and then attacked Aerys himself, killing him. Elys Westerling and Roland Crakehall then entered the throne room, finding Jaime with the corpse. At about the same time, Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch were scaling the walls of Maegor’s Holdfast as Eddard Stark was leading his own forces through the city gates. When Eddard entered the throne room, he found Jaime seated on the Iron Throne.
After these events, Ned rode south to the Stormlands to lift the siege of Storm’s End. The Lords Tyrell and Redwyne bent the knee, and swore fealty to Robert. He then rode to the Tower of Joy in the Red Mountains of Dorne with his six companions (Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, Ethan Glover, Mark Ryswell, Howland Reed and Willam Dustin), and found the three remaining loyalist members of the Kingsguard (Ser Arthur Dayne, Ser Oswell Whent, and Ser Gerold Hightower) guarding it. Only Ned and his bannerman Howland Reed survived the ensuing battle. Ned found Lyanna inside the tower in a „bed of blood”, dying. When Eddard recalls the conflict in a dream, there is an additional detail. While the combatants clash, Lyanna screams. The dream then switches to a storm of blue rose petals, blowing across a blood-streaked sky. It is uncertain if these details are accurate memories.
Lyanna died in a room that smelled of „blood and roses”. A fever had taken her strength. Her voice had been faint as a whisper. There was fear in her eyes, while she called for „Ned” to promise her something. When her brother gave his word, the fear left her. She smiled, and her fingers clutched his own in a tight grip. They were still holding each other as she „gave up her hold on life”. Rose petals slipped from her palm, dead and black. Later, Howland Reed found Eddard still holding the corpse. Howland managed to separate the hands of the living man and the dying girl, though Eddard had no recollection of what happened after Lyanna died. Shortly before her death, Lyanna extracted a promise from Ned. Neither the content of the promise nor the cause of her death are currently known. Her final words were a phrase that would haunt her brother for the rest of his life: „Promise me, Ned.”Lyanna was only sixteen years-old at the time of her death. Her tomb lies in the crypts of Winterfell, beside that of Rickard Stark. At the other side of Rickard’s tomb stands the tomb of Brandon Stark. A statue of Lyanna has been carved in the stone of her tomb, though Robert Baratheon claimed that the stonemason failed to capture her beauty. Eddard claims that Lyanna herself asked him to return her to Winterfell. He reports bringing flowers to her tomb whenever he can, as his sister was fond of flowers. Bran Stark notes that only the kings and lords of Winterfell are supposed to have statues in their likeness, not their family members. But Eddard wished to honor his beloved siblings. Barbrey Dustin informs Theon that the tomb is not a cenotaph or empty tomb; Eddard transported the bones of Lyanna from Dorne.
The war galley Lady Lyanna has been named in honor of Lyanna Stark. King Robert named the galley in honor of the maid he had loved and lost. Davos Seaworth considers it a beautiful ship, likely its „beauty” inspiring the name.
Lyanna Mormont, youngest daughter of Maege Mormont, is named after Lyanna Stark. Stannis Baratheon feels this was a transparent attempt to win the favor of Eddard Stark.
Eddard Stark has a nightmare involving Lyanna and her statue. In the dream, Eddard walks through the crypts of Winterfell. He can hear the statue of Lyanna whispering: „Promise me, Ned”. He notices the statue wearing a garland of pale blue roses, while her eyes weep blood. Eddard immediately wakes with his heart racing.
Theon Greyjoy has a nightmare involving a feast of the dead at Winterfell. Many of the dead men and women attending are people that Theon knew personally or were slain by his own hand and/or command. But he also notices faces that he had never known in life. Among them is Lyanna: a slim, sad girl wearing a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown splattered with blood. Brandon Stark stood beside her, their father Rickard just behind them. Theon wakes up screaming when Robb Stark and Grey Wind, both bleeding, join the feast.
O my gosh, they are so cute!!! The most dangerous, cruel, creppy, powerful men and women of Westeros are portraited as Chibi puppets. The result is amazing. Look at them! Who could now be pissed off by Jaime`s sweet, harmless arrogance or who could hate and want anything bad to happen to the charming, funny, innocent, adorable little boy that Petyr Baelish is? And that` s available to practically everyone.
I`ve run by chance into this splendid photo gallery, called „Leaked dreams of our past” by Ines Rehberger and my first thought was Catelyn Tully, back during Robert`s rebellion when she was young. Red hair, blue eyes, river everywhere, and even some similarities with the actress that played her role in the TV series. What colors, what ambiance, what mystery! No wonder Littlefinger fell for her.
Well, this is a great coincidence. She is wearing a yellow dress, with yellow roses, like the Tyrell`s, and she is walking on a green garden (you can say it`s Highgarden), like the Tyrell flag`s background. And she has brown hair, which is the specific hair color of this house. Maybe she is that beautiful cousin about whom Margaery was talking to Sansa. It could be, isn`t she?
I thought a lot about who should play Arianne Martell, and I came to the conclusion that I don`t see her portrayed by any of the young actresses of nowadays.
There is a Chilean actress, Leonor Varela, who played Cleopatra in the 1999 adaption, who cold play both innocent, stubberned and powerful, but she is 41 years old, so the age is completely unmatched.
And I remembered that reading A feast for crows for the first time, I first pictured Gina Lollobrigida from her famous film-Solomon and Sheba to be just like the dornish princess. A pity these two are no longer young and beautiful anymore. BTW, hope HBO won`t erase her character. But I don`t think they`ll do it, she is too important.
